have a 55 olds with a 324ci needing a starter motor , can not get it rebuilt as armature is beyond repairing .
    i can source a starter from a 59 olds with a 371 ci .
does anyone have any experience with swapping these , are they interchangeable .
    thanks mike..

  2. 54-55 on the starter 56 will fit by changing solenoid if necessary

  3. one can get a armature from a 55-59 chev truck v8 also 54-56 REO 6cyl according to HOLLANDER

Tony @GOATROPER02 offers a new smaller gear reduction starter if you wish to upgrade. Another option, just saying..

The '59 starter will have a different bolt pattern than the '55
If you want direct bolt in look for the '54-'56

Like you, I wanted to stay with the original. Eventually I switched to the gear reduction starter and have not regretted doing it one bit.

With what Junkyarddog_1 posted you should be able to swap your end frame and solenoid onto a 55/59 Chevy truck starter just by switching end frames and maybe starter drives.

I've swapped end frames on starters a lot to use the heavier duty fields and armature from another GM rig such as an Olds starter on a Chevy when I didn't have a heavy duty Chevy starter.

  9. I have about 20 new armatures, 40's and 50's, most are numbered and boxed, 3 are not. I will look for yours if you are interested. Dave
Added: I have a lot of starter drives and brush sets also.
