When planning road trips don't overlook America's first coast to coast road the Lincoln Highway in 1919. It started in New York & ended up in San Francisco. It has a great history but gets over shadowed by 66. When you do that road trip you'll come right through here. I agree with 97, you and your roadster on the road will create and uncover more stories than you'll ever be able to write. One contact will lead to a dozen. The history and the present of hot rodding is a blend. It is living history with the past still in the oral tradition of the living. Few of us will ever write it down because we can't or don't see where our part fits and in some cases because there isn't time to write and continue building.

Tom Cotter's book about going coast-to-coast in a Model T along the Lincoln Highway is a good road trip story and tells a lot of the history of the Lincoln Highway.

A lot of history and politics in the different alignments of the Lincoln Highway. Sadly it is not as easy to find and follow many of the early segments or to sort out what modern highways were part of it. It pretty much started as a bunch of red, white,& blue signs showing which wagon track to take to the next town.

Truth. During the school year, I drive to work on a short remnant (about 9 miles) of the LH every day. When the grandpa car doesn't look so much like a derelict, I'm gonna park it in front of the few signs.

A few yers ago a whole box of unused LH signs were found in an old building here. I failed to snag one. :(
There are a lot of accessible pieces in Northern CA. We'll get Joey to make a run.

  8. The Lincoln highway runs adjacent to I-80 between Omaha and Lincoln...known as state highway 6. I usually take it when I'm going to Lincoln...it's in great condition and there are plenty of small towns to drive through.....even a factory outlet for [I think} Bakers chocolate!

Cob! Getting to finally meet ya made my day—seriously. And it was a damn good day! Glad we're figuring out the art of the selfie!

For those of you who weren't in Des Moines, Cob and I were drooling over this Olds-powered '33.

Such a neat book. I loved reading about all the people they met along the way.

    A historic route for sure!

I'll definitely have to check it out.

Yes yes! I gotta get out there!

All this talk of road trips is the perfect excuse to announce the roadster's first big haul. This September, my roommate Michael and I are going to load up our camping gear and hit the road for the RPM Nationals in Santa Margarita. According to my calculations, it'll be about 500 miles round trip. Naturally, we'll be taking as many old roads as possible IMG_8361.jpg
Maybe we'll race? Maybe we'll just spectate? Either way, it's going to be one hell of a trip. I still have a handful of items to check off before the car is ready, but it's getting close.

Don't worry, just because I'm out of town doesn't mean that I'm not making progress on the car. That being said, I have a fairly big life announcement that @corncobcoupe hinted at earlier.

After six fun, challenging and unbelievably fulfilling years at The Rodder's Journal, I started a new full-time job at the end of June. I'm now a Content Creation Specialist at RideTech, which means I'll be traveling around the country taking photos, shooting videos, and writing stories about hot rods, customs and racecars for their growing website and social channels. Even though they're based out of Indiana, I'll be working remotely from San Francisco. 62FCC0B0-4BCC-40A2-90BF-20FCC0F194F9.jpg
For my first video feature, I focused on Kyle Severin's homebuilt '59 Impala from Minnesota. More on that later!

While I was at the show, I took a whole lot of mental notes for tricks and tips that I can apply to my roadster. Above all, I paid extra attention to Lee Pratt's Deuce five-window. Last time I saw the car was at the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, so it was pretty special to check it out now that it's had some street miles.
    IMG_6406.jpg
Lee is a master of his craft. An artist by trade, he knows how to perfect the macro and the micro of building a car. Not only does this five-window have the overall look, it's also loaded with the best details. Those colors, textures and treasures put this '32 in a league of its own.

Joey, did you take any more detailed pictures of his headers? I have a 324 Olds and I really like that style, with the two outside ports sweeping into the large center pipe.

You could look at that thing all day! Never noticed the not uncommon headlight stands polished up and connected with a bar. Haven’t ever seen that done before but it looks great!

  18. I hope this thread has a moratorium on speculation regarding TRJ... Congratulations on the new position Joey! That's pretty exciting and will be a great opportunity to build your skills and relationships, all while travelling the country!

I couldn’t find any photos that really showed them all that well but belond made/ makes headers in that style. If you search that name I’m sure you’d get some workable results

Good luck with your new job! I know you will do them proud. Love that coupe. When '59 Chevys came out I thought they were the ugliest car I'd ever seen. I was 14 what did I know? Now I can't get enough of them especially El Caminos. My friend has a nice stock one with a 283.

Lets not forget that fantastic spread in the new hop up book!

saving the rest of that one for tonight, the further you get into this roadster the better and better your journalism work gets. I’ll have to give you a holler when my feature car is ready to shoot haha

I'll dig through my files and see what I can find. IMG_5644.jpg
Oh! Here's one from Pomona. According to his tech sheet, they're custom made.

Thank you! I'm three weeks in and I've already learned a whole lot about a wide range of topics. As you can tell from this thread (and others), I love nothing more than taking on new challenges. Here's to new beginnings!

Thank you! I'll have to post up the video profile when it's finished. I've always wanted a '59 El Camino to haul motorcycles and estate sale treasures. Someday!

    Can't wait to see it!

Thank you, Tim! I'm hoping I'll have a copy waiting for me when I get back to San Francisco next week. And thank you for the journalism comment. Although I can't say if it's getting better or not, I do feel more connected than ever. It's helping me ask the right questions, because I'm learning what it takes to put one of these cars on the road.

Hey, you know I'm always down for a trip back to Missouri!

Meanwhile, my roommate sent me this classic shot of me trying to persuade the decklid into place with one of my favorite tools. Won't be long and I'll be back at it! IMG_6556.jpg
Note the shirt. Sharp-eyed readers will remember that I had my tires mounted and balanced at Andy's.

Don't study it too much and put too many of those "details" into your roadster Joey, keep it simple , a hot rod has the bare bones of necessity .......that coupe doesn't really do it for me. Its way overcooked for my palate, too many"perfect must haves" on one car, which IMO makes it a show car. A few unique details, subtly and tastefully added does more for your car than 100 perfect parts from 1-800-streetrod!
For what it's worth I hate the headlight position , and the combination of those mounts and that stupid looking bar! Then the number plate is mounted in a square edged box on the spreader bar !
To me , this is an example of cars built to gain the attention of magazines and show promotors, which led to the death of hot rods as they became the overkill and excess from the late 60s and 70s and slid in to the pastel street rods of the 90s and beyond. It has the elements of a real traditional hot rod but they are overshadowed by too much attention to volume and perfection !

Maybe not this one but "Show cars" are what made me quit going to car shows in the late '60s. When it evolved into bathtubs, coffins, phone booths, off centered one eyed ..............o_O
