Where can you find vintage fuel masks? I've been wanting to buy one and I can't find any. I went on Simpson web site and did a google seach for fuel masks, vintage fuel masks, drag racing fuel masks and I'm coming up empty handed.

    Any suggestions?

It is on the race car web site. Kinda pricy. Is that what they go for usually? That's the only place I can find it. Maybe that's why...

It took me a couple of years to find mine . I advertised on racing websites and everything... When I was looking original ones were going for like 600 on ebay..

I traded Don Garlits some parts for my fire suit!!

    That was kind of cool..

Not trying to hijack the post. But I was always curious why they wore those masks. Was the nitro exhaust toxic, more so than regular gas?

It seems they only wore those on the nitro burning cars.

Obviously you've never been near a running nitro car. Careful breathing can help sometimes but it's usually like teargas. I am usually pretty good about it on the starting line and in the pits but occasionally I get blasted...then starts the waterworks. It's worth it though.

daren , stand near a nitro car on start-up, it's like someone dropped a teargas bomb. I can only guess they helped.

No I can't say that I have been near a running nitro motor, never been to the major drag events like the winternationals or such. I usually like the roundy round racing more than todays drag racing.

I'm guessing the locals at the little 1/8 mile track here aren't running it. Besides theres never any rails running here anyway.

But there was a guy racing a moped against a 78' lincoln. Bracket racing, sheesh.

In addition to that, they protected the driver's face from an engine fire. The dragsters were front engined when those masks were popular.

You have to at least once in your life smell and hear one of those engines close up.

Yeah they have a way of making you jump, run and scream like a little girl when your walking by in the pits not paying attension and one fires up right next to you. This allows your friends to point and laugh for at least the rest of the day maybe even the year!:)

Oh man Darren! Even alcohol that your sprint cars run will make your eyes burn a little, but nothing compared to nitro. Exactly like tear gas. Burns your eyes, nose, throat, causing you to cough and cry at the same time. I have seen many of grown men running back from nitro cars crying and coughing with big smiles on their faces.

I will check on e-bay again but I had no luck earlier. What would it be under? Nostalgia parts? Maybe I'm not looking under the right topic.

Thanks for the help so far guys.
