Well here goes... A 1940 Ford Standard hood does not fit a 1940-41 Ford Truck.
The truck hood is shaped differently where it meets the sides of the cowl, and it has a raised rib that runs horizontally along each side to match the raised ribs on the sides of the cab. The standard hood does not have any raised ribs. The 39 Deluxe hood is not exactly the same as a 40 Standard hood; both will install onto a 40 cowl, and use the same hinges and hinge plates, but the stainless trim on the 39 is narrower and smooth instead of ribbed like the 40. The 39 Deluxe has two horizontal strips on each side, the 40's only have one per side. I think the hood catch on the 39 Deluxe is slightly different, so you'd have to change to a 39 Deluxe grill if you used a 39 Deluxe hood (If you don't use any trim, and you use a custom hood catch, you MIGHT be able to get a 39 Deluxe hood to work with a 40 Standard grille, and vice-versa.). The ribbed stainless trim on a 40 Standard is different (shorter) in length compared to the stainless trim on a 40 Deluxe. A 40 Deluxe hood will install onto a 40 Standard cowl, once again it uses the same hinges and hinge plates as the 40 Standard, and 39 Deluxe, but you'd have to change to a 40 Deluxe grille.

39-40 Mercurys are a different animal, their hoods will not fit a Ford. Their front fenders are shaped differently, and I believe a bit longer than a Ford.

    Best of luck

ok, thanks for that. Is this in response to a question on another thread? Me thinks this is out of place. But, useful info nonetheless.

I'm a bit new at this! Another new member started his first thread as a question about 40 hoods... in the introductions section. I, and a few others answered his, and a second members, questions before a "senior" member gave us hell for discussing hoods in the wrong area! I started this new thread, including a link to it from the misplaced thread. Is there a better way to transfer misplaced threads?

Her's the thread that started it:

Haha.. well catching hell on the HAMB is part of the initiation process, just let it roll off your back and Hot Rod on!

I wouldn't worry about this thread, just let it ride. On the one hand if someone searches "40 Ford Hood" then this will pop up and they can use the info you posted, so it's not useless.

I know this is anold thread but i have been researching this and want some more info to be in one place.

Early 39 standard hood latch brace is different than late 39. Identified by an a or a b at the end of the part number
Also different than the 1940 standard latch slightly. There is a small brace spot welded into the nose of the hood of the 40 standard making the nose trim hard to install and making the latch ***embly not bolt in. Removing it and modifying should make it work. Appears that the hood front edge trim is interchangable with some drilling.
