Yikes! I don't know where Orcas Island is...but it sure doesn't look like the climate is very "old car friendly"

    Hello,

What an envious place to work and visit. Your friend is very fortunate. That “castle” is quite nice, too. We have made three trips to the San Juan Islands over the years. We had our 4th planned in 2013, but my wife’s dad was hospitalized and we decided to postpone that visit to only San Juan Island and Roche Harbor.

Of all of the Pacific Northwest areas we have visited, these islands just made it the second choice where we would live. Of course, we would have to get a power boat to navigate the waters of the islands and not have to wait for a ferry or some ferry services. San Juan is large and has a ton of different areas from flat shorelines to tall tree lined slopes. But, Orcas is unique.

Our two times traveling to Orcas Island was a wonderful experience. We would never get tired of the whole area and we had already picked out a dock for our sailboat. Although in looking at sailboats, we would also have to get a powerboat. Why? Sailboats allow anyone to enjoy the quiet surrounding to get where you had planned.

In an indirect way, sailing just seems closest to nature and being able to skim over the surfaces of the waters, everywhere. Except for these San Juan Islands. When we were on the big ferries, we saw the futility of sailboats and owners fighting the current, staying in place for long periods of time and not getting past a certain point of the blue waters.

In the ocean in So Cal, there are currents, but not to the extreme of the San Juan Islands. We have sailed through some pretty rough currents, waves and high winds. It is not the most enjoyable moments. But, at least we were able to get to the next harbor up the coast and a relaxing recuperation nap. In the San Juan Islands we noticed the desperation of some sailboats and occupants as they were fighting, but going nowhere. To us, that is not enjoyable.

But, a simple powerboat would just cut through the current and get from point A to point B. In the peninsula channel of Orcas Island, there would be endless ways to enjoy sailing and the views the island offers. The docks at the marinas seem well protected from neighboring currents. That was the first thing my wife and I noticed.

The tallest peak offers tremendous views all in a 360 degree panorama of the surrounding coast and islands. A pure photographic moment was always there on Orcas Island. The hike to the top was not that bad for a couple of older folks. Plus, as mentioned earlier, it would have been fun driving around the coastal roads in a cool hot rod.

Enjoy your time in Orcas. Perhaps since the pandemic put a stop to our traveling road trips, we probably will look forward to our next trip up there after everything is safe and sound. When we were there both times, the weather was perfect. One of the store owners said it is like So Cal. Which it was at the time. Warm, light winds and the sun looked amazing reflecting on the waters surrounding the whole island coastline.

  10. You hit on some key points.
My friend Grant is from Wichita, Kansas.
He started out by selling commercial airliners for Boeing to the Far East - then became an airline pilot and flew 30 years for Alaska - he has been retired for four years now.

The view from the top of the island on a clear day rivals the best island views in the world.

Their house is over 8000 square feet and they pretty much hand built it - a work in progress going on 25 years that Grant designed himself.

Five stories if you count the top turret.

I am on the third floor with “ Carl “ the polar
    bear and his friends ….

I am waiting for a full load out of Anacortes
but - quite frankly - I may never leave here ….

Seen a few old cars out on the San Juan islands. There is a whole group of islands that are worth exploring if in the Seattle area. Orcas has Mount Cons***ution which has spectacular views. There is very little public access to the water thought. San Juan island is busiest especially trying to get the ferry off. I really like Lopez Island, very quiet, be a neat place to explore in a vintage car.

We are just outside Concrete WA near the North Cross Highway. Lots of ferry rides to the San Juan's to watch the grandkids play high school sports, waiting on get on one of those ferries gets old in a hurry.

I've been to Deer Harbor on Orcas on my sailboat a few times but have never been there by land.
