I am probably being thick, but I can't work out my engine details for spec etc. I have a SBC with casting at rear of 3970010 a bit further along is a K and further along a 2. The details on the decking plate are. T6B507553 & K11 19 TYX. There is also at the rear the numbers 010 & 979. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Gotty
Most of the GMC motors I have seen had forged steel cranks. I would think that if the "core shift" isn't bad it may be a good block to build, nothing wrong with a "smogger" regular gas and cool running. Conservative cam and carburation and you are good to go. In my opinion. Pat
if there are any traces of orange paint, don't be surprised. Most of them were painted orange. the last couple years were blue. And when they get rebuilt, who knows... Most of them were also 4 bolt mains, especially those used in trucks. It's just another of millions of smog truck 350s.
I got lucky a couple of times getting a 350 4-bbl motor out of a '70-'71 GMC pick up.... The block had 4-bolt mains and a steel crank including the beefier truck "X" connecting rods....
I've found that a lot of the truck suffixes and other codes don't show up on several ID your Chevy engine pages. I've spent a half hour searching before only to find that Jim and maybe another had posted the info while I was hunting and getting skunked.
I use books a lot of the time. I have the Chevy parts book for trucks from 1969, and 1972, and also used to have a truck flat rate book from the 70s that had a lot of them.
Trucks can have 2 bolt main blocks too. I've come across a number of 1/2 ton trucks with 2 bolt main SBC engines. GMC or Chevy.
from what I've seen in the 70s there were some 2bbl truck engines that were 2 bolts. The 4bbls seem to be mostly 4 bolt. But there are some exceptions, of course
That's a lot of info and help. Thank you all. I ***ume the only way to see if 2 or 4 bolt mains is to take the sump off?.
The man ( squirrel ),,is right,,,,,as usual . My dad gave me an old 350 short block several years ago,,,,,an 010 block . I was really excited,,,,expected a 4 bolt main,,,,,,pulled the pan later . Nope,,,,,,,2 bolt ,,,I was really shocked,,,,,all the 010 s I had ever seen were all 4 bolt main . That taught me I didn’t quite know all I thought I knew,,,,LoL. Tommy
Those do work if you're careful with them... We use one at work to check for stelag***es (sp) in aluminum castings....
