    Really contemplating moving the crossmember back, and going with a spring over axle. Wheelbase was extended 4” to 116”. Front crossmember was moved 7” ahead, running a ‘48 front end with added leaf springs.

    All kinds of clearance by the engine... Love to find an old chrome drop axle

    I've had this old Kodak snap shot in the garage for sometime...finishing up this evening, I remembered to bring it in and scan it for you...The picture was developed in April 1974 (according to the back). Some real similarities, but, I don't think its the same car.....rear fenders are similar, poncho motor, and some other cues... I don't have much to tell you about the picture...I bought it at the Brimfield Fair (an antique flea market that happens 3 times a year in Brimfield, MA). I saw it displayed with some Fleer drag racing cards and bought the lot. The seller didn't have any info on it, but, he was from CT. Anyway, for whatever its worth....I figured I got this far so why not scan it....enjoy that wonderful 5w!

    That is a cool old coupe! Definitely some differences but love to see these New England coupes, especially sporting the Poncho engines. Thanks for taking the time to scan it!

    Heard back from the machine shop, it’s bore .060 over and can’t go anymore. Has putting in most of the cylinders, so he’s trying to steer me towards another standard bore block he has. Most likely the way to go. Said this one had 12:1 forged TRW pistons, and an Isky race RR3 cam in it. He’s talked to Isky, and they agreed is should be fine on the street.

    Could you bore it more then sleeve it to use your pistons?

    It is an option to bore and sleeve, but it’s $150 per cylinder, and 12:1 is a little high for street use if I reuse the pistons. He thinks it actually higher then 12:1, the book showed that number with larger CC chambers then this motor has, and the block has also been decked slightly.

    Found a ‘63 389 in the back of an old van for a fair price, just waiting on the guy to move some other cars in order to get to it.

    Also got the T10 back from the rebuilder, guy did an excellent job on it, as well as rebuilding the Hurst shifter.

    Has anyone seen Pontiac 8 lug drums adapted to early Ford? I assume it would be similar to adapting Buick finned drums.

    Does anyone happen to recognize this slave cylinder?? Don’t think it’s international like the clutch/brake master cylinder.

    I’ve got some updates to post soon, but still nothing on the history.

    it looks like the frame was metallic maroon at some point as well. I’m guessing it also ran a Flathead Ford as well.

  23. Shaun, NAPA may have a mount book with pics and specs. We had one from Anchor in the parts store back about 10 years ago. Might be one on line also.

    Got the steering arms bent, and most of the steering figured out, had to roll it outside for first time since I brought it home. I think I got the stance right where I want it.

    The chrome front end ended up being way too low, so I cheated and re-reversed the spring back to stock. Also cut down some springs and made a 1” spacer at the top. Not as bad of a nosedive now.

    I was planning on running the tie rods below wishbone, but after dropping the steering arms I saw that was never going to happen, luckily there’s plenty of clearance over the wishbones.

    I love that it's Poncho powered!
    I'll have to confess though, I thought the rear fenders were butt ugly and I would've cut them off in a heartbeat.
    But now that you have the proper size wheels and tires under them it looks really badass.

    A little update…

    Thrashed on the coupe to be able to bring it up to the Pinetree Jamboree in Winterport Maine to display, but unfortunately the car just wasn’t ready.

    A friend heavy into old hot rods recommended his buddy to rebuild the 389 in the coupe. He seemed reasonable and somewhat knowledgeable so I gave him a try.

    After waiting a few weeks, I bug him and he said the block was bore too far, really need another engine. So I found one. Unfortunately the one in the car was a 60, and I bought a 63. The builder had both engines, as well as my bellhousing, flywheel, and front motor mount so when I dropped off the 63 I told him be sure to check that everything fits before he started.

    Well. He didn’t check. Ended up with a rebuilt 63 389- that doesn’t fit. None of it fit. Bellhousing, flywheel (which he cut), motor mount, etc. none of it fit. When I showed him nothing fit he told me “ahh you should just sell this engine and buy a Chevy”.

    Pretty disappointed, but hey what can I do now? How hard could it be to adapt a 63 Pontiac to the T-10? Well after about 100 hours of research, trying multiple adapters, cutting up a BOP scattershield, having a starter plate plasma cut, buying another flywheel and starter, and pulling my hair out I finally threw in the towel.

    So. The Poncho is back to square one. Haven’t had much luck finding a 59 or 60 block locally. I’m weighing my options of sleeving this one, or possibly sonic testing and boring to use 400 pistons, or maybe custom pistons?

    On the bright side I did manage to find a grille. The chopped 32 grille never really did it for me, and it would be hard to match the metallic orange…. Plus I just love old chrome! Supposedly it came off a 50’s built heavily channeled 34 Roadster from the East Coast

  30. Too bad he didn't recommend "you should just sell this engine and buy a Chevy," when you first went to him. May have made it easier to realize that he wasn't "your guy."
    Man, I hate to hear that spent the time and then chasing good money after bad.
