Can somebody help me with my steering problem I thought I bought a bigger Box for my 40 forward to door and now in finding out I think it's not a bigger Box and it steers like krapp and I'm told I need A 525 Box Does anybody have any suggestions
I thought I bought a vega box, But casting numbers on my Box are 5679142 Which turns out as I'm searching information a Camaro Box from 1968 to 70 I'm being told I need a 525 Box instead of whatever it is I have. Hopefully someone can help me with this
When I redid my 40 coupe I used a Borgeson 525 box from P&J with a P&J bolt in mount and a P&J steering arm. Mine has the short input shaft. It drives fine, at any speed.
Thanks, I'm glad I found it, I think it's going to be a wealth of knowledge, looks like a bunch of great enthusiasts.
So what you are saying is that my 5679142 Saginaw Box is A 525 Box, correct? Or is A 525 Box and a Vega Box in the same casing, What I mean is have the same casting number?
I use 525 boxes in all 40's we do. Some have long shaft and some short shaft--also two different ratios
Before you change it be sure it is properly set up and adjusted. There is a lot of confusion about the need to center the box and set the clearance. Unless you really understand how to do this you should take it to someone who does and have it checked. Have an alignment done while you're at it.
Yes I've been told her they come in 24 to 1 and 16 to 1 my question to you is how well do you like the 16 to 1 in a 40 ford?
Yes I confirmed with borgson this morning that the Box I have is actually A525 Box it's a 24 to 1 the problem is I find out now that I've Jack the car up and checked I have a king pin that's tight I need to remove it and do it over I removed the wish bone bolts and replace them with stainless replacement wish bone bolts the don't have all the attachments on top like the stock ones so that my new TCI sway bar will work but you have to heat the straight axle to get those bolts out and I think it caused my king pin to freeze. I have it fixed. In 1971 when I bought this car (for $300. and drive it home) the steering was sloppy, so I put a steering stabilizer on, well it has gone bad, I took it off and now it steers like a dream, and with the new 16 inch steering wheel it should be even better.
I wanna thank everybody on here that replied to my problem my question so thanks guys you're a wealth of knowledge and were a big help in my process of figuring this out thanks again
We appreciate that you stopped back in with a thanks. Not everyone takes the time to do that anymore.
Manual boxes had 24 to 1 for standard steering and 20 to 1 for the Z28 "quick steering" manual box. Power steering had the 16 ton 1 ratio. That according to the GM archives 1969 Camaro sheet 1969-Chevrolet-Camaro.pdf (gmheritagecenter.com) I remember that back in 69 some guys who bought the 69 Z28 for the "cool factor" rather than the performance factor complained that the steering was hard in tight quarters.
In about 2010 I decided to switch to a 525 box in my 41 Pickup. Checked Lares since they're near me, bought their 16:1 ration box. I liked the quick steering, but was difficult to park and maneuver at low speed, especially for my daughter who uses the trunk at BTT50s. Last winter I switched to their 24:1 ration, and it's much easier to turn, although I do miss the quicker steering at anything over 10 MPH. I would sell the 16:1 if anyone is interested, good shape, low miles, come with newer rag joint.
