Hi: I am going to try doing a project that isn't a VW bus or Morris Minor for a change :). To that end, I bought a roller 49 Ford Coupe. It doesn't seem to have much rust, but it does need a few trim pieces (hood lettering and trunk handle at a minimum). My plan is to build a comfortable, reliable driver with new suspension, new engine, new trans and third member, air conditioning, etc. My questions for this sage group: 1) Should I get a new frame or just a front clip? 2) The car has a seized 318 and 727 (unknown condition) which I plan to replace. I want a complete crate engine and trans of some sort. Doesn't need to be a fire breather. Suggestions? 3) Suggestions on where to get replacement trim pieces? 4) Does anybody make a digital dash? Although I would never let my spousal unit know, cost is not a huge consideration. Appreciate any advice :)

Frame swaps are always problematic; I would advise against it unless there is a serious problem with the original frame. Even a clip is unnecessary. SBC's go in easily (the only complication is tie rod clearance), but a SBF (Ford in a Ford) is always a plus, although a little more complicated. For parts, I would suggest Shoebox Central as a good place to start.

Theres no need to change the frame or any of the steering. My 50 Ford steers easily with one finger. Just dont put wide tires on the front. A newer rear axle is a good idea. The first time I saw a small block chevy in a 49-50-51 was in 1962. Its an excellent choice and is traditional.
The 49 was Fords first modern car and wasnt fully developed. In 1950 Ford advertised the 50 as improved in 50 ways so you may want to look at the improvements and add them to your 49. I've never understood the idea of changing the frame for something that doesnt fit.

I wouldn`t change the frame unless is from another shoebox. SBF or SBC fit well and there are bolt on engine mounts for both. Shoebox central is a good place for parts.
