I'm looking for some ideas on an aircleaner for my 302. What are you guys running?? I'm using one of those Edelbrock triangular foam thingys right now (yeah, I know they are a fire hazard), but I want to do something not-so-cookiecutter.

I know, no matter what you do, most times it's been done a thousand times before, but I need some inspiration!!

BTW, it going on my hooded '53 Vicky, if it matters.

What valve covers are you running? I think that the air cleaner should be close to the valve covers. Best looking air cleaner IMO is a Cal Custom finned top. Now if I could just find one for a decent price that will go with my $10 Cal custom valve covers....

Here's a couple idea's for ya. I kinda have this air cleaner, valve cover fetish myself. I really like the early Cal-Custom stuff and I think it looks best when it is just cleaned up good ( scuff pad and maybe some wenol polish ) but not polished to a high gloss.
The 1st one is on my roadster an original cal-custom air cleaner with cal-custom short valve covers. This car has roller rocker's so I did have to use a spacer between the valve cover's and heads to get clearence.
The second on my 55 gasser is a old drag boat re-pop by okie cock fighter here on the hamb. There fiberglass and a real nice piece, comes with the flange riveted on so all it needs is paint. The valve covers are original cal-custom, tall version.
The 3rd on my 64 wagon is ? Not sure.I bought it at the Whitchita Ks. swap earlier this year. A pair of these would be kick-ass on a 2x4 set-up. (if anyone has another I would be very interested ) The Valve covers are again cal-custom tall version. Gary

Here is mine, I found a aluminum velocity stack that has a 8" opening on top painted it black and topped it off with a 9" cal custom air cleaner.

  9. I used a standard 10" moroso chrome unit. Then I threw away the top and used a 56 or 57 Ford Hubcap. This is the one with the bullet center and it says ford in 2 places.

  10. for a clean set up, use 13" moon wheel disc. same size as most standard air cleaners. Simple, plain and goes with any valve cover.

I'm running one of these 12" Helling's style assemblys, I think it has a nice clean, classic look, and you don't see 'em on every other car.

I got mine from Riley Automotive, he's a HAMB alliance vendor and VAPHEAD here on the Hamb.

Here's a future air cleaner I just found while cleaning. It's an aluminum cover off an old commercial blower - I think it'll look cool on my '47 or maybe even the '56.

I origionally was going to cut off all the tabs, but my buddy thinks I should work those standoffs into it - I'm gonna make a base and see how it looks with them - I can always machine them off.

  15. This isn't mine however... I "had" one of these in a 57 Ford Ranchero and I couldn't keep any tires on it...!

I made a copy of it in shop class and ended up selling the copy and the original fairly cheap...!

I saw just the aircleaner sell for a bit over $6,700 on the bay last year!

Some pics from a 1958 pocket catalog I picked up at a local flea market. Fun to see what was on the market back then.

Mine were from O'Brien Truckers. (502cid, '67 Vette 427/435 intake and carbs.) They worked very nice.

    Thanks for all the input!

I wanted somthing to spruce up my Thunderbird but couldn't find a aftermarket cleaner i liked. I love caddy air cleaners but I didn't think it would look right on a 65 car so, I took my stocker and cut off the snorkel. Then I welded on two chrome pencil tips and molded and painted where the welds killed the chrome. Works for me but no one ever sees it...especially since It doesn't run anymore.
