Was it the unusual styling that killed the Edsel? Whatever the case, you don't see them too often. Thanks.

  3. I've always liked them for the same reason that I find pug dogs irresistable :D

    Don't have one though.

My understanding was that the Edsel was preceeded with a lot of marketing hype a year before it was unvieled. Supposed to have a lot of technical advancements. By the time it was finally unvieled, the country was in a recession in 1958 and the Edsel was pricey. It didn't help matters that the styling went over like a lead baloon with the public. Personally I never thought they were that ugly. All 50's cars seemed unique to me. The FE's started in the Edsel. The Edsel also had a push button transmission in the center of the steering wheel.

Edsels are awesome. I remember as a little guy going to cruise nights with my mom and the Edsel really standing out in the crowd. I dig em. The 58 guage cluster that rotates horizontally would be badass in pretty much anything, and the 58 Bermuda taillights are among the sickest ever designed. I'd love to see some cool ass Edsels

They say that part of the reason, was that the grill looked too much like a certain part of a womans anatomy...................You would think that would help sales.

  11. I raced a 361 Edsel (E 400) engine way back when. 12-1 MT comp pistons, Isky roller cam, Weiand 6 x 2 barrel manifold, Spalding flame thrower ingnition. Ran pretty good. Wish I had it now.

No pics to share as I don't have a scanner , but I owned a '58 Citation 4 door a few years back . It ran a hot 429/C6 that I was too stupid/lazy to swap for a SB before I sold her . She was also juiced all round too , and looking a little tired .

My first "scene" type car though so I'll always love her . Especially the way she went like hell off the line , and then totally lost the plot at about 80mph if she so much as saw a bump . Jeez , she handled something terrible !

Happy days with an ugly old bitch :D

  14. One of the urban legends around my town is a '58 2 door post Edsel with a 430 Lincoln in it...before I had a camera and about the time I got my drivers license...that was a few years ago. The car was named "Wicked Ruby" and I remember it was very fast, but what wasn't to a 16 year old kid?

I've always liked 58's as they were so unique. '59 and '60 are pale imitations.

Lincsel or Edcoln? The hybrid Edsel is interesting. Doesn't a HAMBer have an Edchero?

Future status, someday! I'm thing of just finishing the underside, suspension, powertrain, electrical and most of the interior and then driving all summer in the faded and surface rusted exterior, that seem to be what most of my rooder buddies think I should do.

The guy in kornbinders photos has over 100 edsels but the government wont let him sell parts becuase he doesnt have a lisc and at 80 something he isnt getting one so they well end up crushed someday soon as the boys only see the value of the land. sad!!

  20. I don't have an Edsel, but I always thought it would be fun to own one. I think they are nice looking cars. Never really understood what people hated about them so much. Lots of old cars that are loved now were oddballs that nobody wanted back then. Go figure!

Anyway, I found this picture on the web and thought it would be perfect for this post. E

I had a wagon but sold it in preferance for something more shapely...
loved it though, got the looks and could fit all our camping gear in the back..

was the same shape as the 1959 ford rancher but looked better in my opinion.
6 litre through straight pipes, airbags on all corners, drove like a pig but looked and sounded great.

wouldnt have another one though, love my buick to much!
