Howdy all...Tim here. I am using a pertronix ingnition in my 1955 Dodge..It has worked pretty well so far. I find that at times I could probably use a hotter spark though. Currently I am using the stock coil, but I know that they have the flame thrower coils. Problem is...I can't figure out which one to buy...I know I should only use the Flamethrower I coil..but it doesn't say if it would work for a 6 volt pos grnd system... It may only be for the 12volt systems.... The company has no way to contact them to verify...any ideas? Thanks Tim MBL
I called the number on their site to get all the help I could ever need when I was ordering the ignitor system for my Buick... www.pertronix.com Phone: (909) 599-5955 Fax: (909) 599-6424 440 East Arrow Highway San Dimas, CA 91773
last time I checked, Pertronix didn't make a kit for any of the flathead six Mopar distributors, and, as far as I know, there are no 6 volt kits anyway. I read on the Inliners website that you can combine parts of two different kits, and with some modifications and glue, you can make a conversion, but you're still stuck with 12 volts. A better choice would be the Langdon's Stovebolt Engine Co. converted small HEI, also strictly 12 volt. If you're going to stay 6 volts, you're limited to points of some type. I have an NOS Mallory Magspark dual point that I am going to run, and have located an NOS 6 volt positive ground transformer box for it. Goofy thing is, I WAS planning the 12 volt conversion, but am going to forgo it now for use of the ignition.
I didn't see any ignitors for the flathead 6...But they do have them for the V8 and for 6 volts Positive Ground. That is what I am currently using. I spoke to someone there and they told me the story with the coil applications...Very enlightening...I will be getting one of the coils soon. Tim MBL
I have 1948 ford flathead. Is it a a benefit to my car to simply add a 6 volt flame thrower ? Will this coil give me a little boost Making it a easier start up when the engine is hot and I am restarting up at the grocery store? Thank You
12 volts on a 6 volt starter is best for that but you sound like your wanting to keep 6 volts. I found no change in starting when I changed to a Pertronix from points, Bad/poor condensers sent me packin’.
I don’t know about availability for the Mopar sixes, but Pertronix does make six volt positive ground stuff. Dad has one in his 1959 International Cub LoBoy mowing tractor. Works great and I used the six volt Flamethrower coil too. Any questions, call The Brillman Company and ask for Mr. Brillman.
