Hot Rods 1964 Buick 401 Nailhead Dynaflow transmission

    any help on a floor shifter for the dynaflow would be great

    Does this look like it will fit a 400 torque convertor 1963 401 dyna flow long gone !!!
     
  3. I havent checked it out yet , but apparently the flexplate locator on the back of the crankshaft on a 65 66 401 is 2 inches and on the back of a 63 is 2 1/4 cant see why you cant throw the 65 66 flexplate on a lathe and open up the locator hole to 2 1/4 .
    This is what was suggested to me when I was looking for a manual flywheel , I happened to find a 63 and 65 66 flywheel ( the whole manual setup for both cars ) at the same garage sale !!!
     
  4. Watch the teeth on your starter as they are all different too !!
     
  5. Is the starter ring gear on the torque convertor on a 400 turbo ??

    any help with a floor shifter for the 1963 dynaflow would be great as i have spent the last three days combing the web for anything and have come up empty. Any suggestions, thoughts, recommendations.....prayers....I will take them all!

    when the dynaflow trans selector arm is pushed all the forward, meaning towards the engine is in park or reverse, or when the selector arm is pushed all the back, meaning towards the rear of the vehicle is in park or reverse? i believe that the shift pattern is PNDLR....if that is in fact the case just need to know which way is the right way?
     
  8. I think all the way forward is park. Easy way to tell would be to put the arm all the way forward and try to rotate the output shaft.
    The ST400 does not have the starter teeth on the torque converter. The outside flange on the crankshaft is the same for both transmissions, but the internal bore is larger for the Dynaflow, necessitating an adapter for Turbo 400 use on those cranks, as well as a 64-66 flexplate. The 401 plate is different from the 425 plate as the balance is different.

    Check on "ebay" as the crank adapter is sold for about $40.

    update on the shifter situation.....Wildcat GS on a buick forum was kind enough to part with a 1963 Riviera floor shifter and received it late last week and mocked it up over the weekend. once i get the linkage tweeked abit it will work perfectly. next onto swapping out my rear axles and ordering up my dropped I-beam front end.

    When i welded in a mount plate on the trans tunnel for the shifter, about 16 inches back from the dynaflow and about 7 inches above the dynaflow trans shift arm....I built a linkage that will follow the shifter detents from Park, Neutral, Drive and Low.....the issue is that the throw of the shifter is such that it does not have enough room for the shifter to move the linkage to move the dynaflow shift arm into Reverse. I have attempted to move the shifter around, higher, lower, right, left, adjust the linkage.....nothing. the only thing i can think of it to create a mount point in front of the stock mount point on the shifter thus allowing the "throw/arc" of the shift lever to engage sooner and hopefully the linkage will pull it into reverse before the shift lever runs out of room. any tips/tricks/wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all
