Hi, could I get someone's experience here? This is the steering box we cannot seem to identify. It should be 30's/40's Ford or Teens Dodge but could be anything. I have attached views from several angles. Thanks for all comments, dan...
There is a "make them full size" tab when you post them so we can actually see them,. It's similar to the Ford one in this thread but not exact. Projects - 1940 Ford Steering Box adjustment | The H.A.M.B. (jalopyjournal.com)
It does look similar but the mounting ears are different. Also, the link's pics don't seem to show the weird adjuster on the bottom. BTW, clicking on the pics bring them full size, (at least in firefox). Thanks for responding, dan...
When you post full images they are twice the size of the smaller pics when enlarged. Fixed it for you
Thanks, that is a lot better. Still would like someone to specifically I. D. the box, anyone??? dan...
That sir, is a genuine 1939 Pontiac steering box. I'll attach a couple pics of the one I removed from my 39. It's a dead nuts match
Lol...I think "in stock" equates to whatever I have laying around the garage that meets the basic criteria, which is "free".
Ageless, you are the man of the hour. Interestingly enough, the others who identified the ford frame are also correct. This is on a hotrod we acquired which has a Ford front suspension grafted to a 1917 Dodge frame and body cab section. The rear body half seems to be '28 Ford, the running gear is a '46 248 Pontiac straight 8 with a '37 top shifting 3spd manual trans. The radiator shroud is 23 Chev. A true build with what you have hotrod. It appeals to me because of its crudeness. If anyone can identify the year of the Ford front suspension, I would be extremely grateful. Thanks to everyone who responded. dan... built with a cutting torch, arc welder, and not much else. If one of the Ford guys here could identify what year Ford front suspension this is I would be extremely grateful:
Seems like we just talked about all this five years ago........ The front half of the frame looks like 41-48 Ford. The axle is 33-36 Ford. Spindles are the same era, but there were a couple different measurements on the 36's so would need to look for part numbers stamped in them. The wishbones are 35-36 Ford. Shocks are Delco, and there were aftermarket kits/brackets to adapt them to Ford frames. The back half of the body is 26-27 Ford coupe with the roof cut off (not roadster).
Good observation alchemy, we did. I have not been able to confirm the sway bar arrangement. I found a pic of a claimed 46 Ford front suspension and steering gear that had a sway bar and am trying to determine if in fact it is a 46. It boils down to where do I buy links and bushings as the steering gear is real sketchy. I'd really like to have some pictorial info that shows the suspension/steering and what the various parts are called from a service manual or something. I don't know the terminology for the various links, etc., that is why I am trying to determine the year. However, I see from your description of the pieces that it is more of a hodgepodge. I've searched a fair amount but get confused as I don't know what the link pieces are called. Many thanks for your observations, it does help. If anyone has service manual pics or links to pages that describe early steering gear with diagrams, I'd be grateful. dan...
