I can add a bit to the method- I brakleened the walls off and sanded them lightly to get rid of the fresh tire skin. Then, I masked roughly what I thought would be the edge of the circle, then took a fixed point and mounted a marker to it- in this case a sharpie on a jackstand, and ran the tire around with the sharpie where the edge should be, it made a nice perfectly circle line, then ran a razor around that lightly and sprayed away

I just did mine with Krylon Fusion. Looked good for about 2 miles. BUT!!!!, I didn't degrease or clean the wheels. I did it just to try it out and see how it worked. Now, this week I'm removing the paint and I'll do it again for real. It takes all of about 15 minutes to mask each tire and about 30 seconds to paint them. I personally think it looks great. I've got a set of Diamondbacks on my 53, and when I put my cars side by side they looked the same.

As far as painting tires being a cheap way out just for a look........yeah, it is! Thats the point! Thats all wide whites are anyway is a look. They don't perform any better than the all black counterpart last time I checked. So if you have basically brand new tires on a car, and you simply want the "look" of whites, paint them, or grind them....who cares, its your car! Hell, don't mask off anything and paint the whole ****ing car, tires and engine included if you want to! I think you'd be a bigger dumb*** for buying brand new whites to replace already brand new tires than you would be just to cough up 6 bucks to paint them.

And since when did all the elitist, authorities-on-every-thing-under-the-sun-fun-nazi-self-proclaimed-cool-police-loudmouthed-***hole-your car ****s-mines-better-cause-I-don't-rattle-can-anything guys show up here on this board? Check your history books, cause the whole nature of this game is about find somthing cheap, build it as low budget as possible, make it remotely safe, paint it however you can, or not, and drive the **** out of it and have fun with it. Or, spend countless thousands of dollars on it, but keep it traditional. Either way, thats what this site is all about...and hopefully everyone learns something along the way that they didn't know before.

And for the guy who bashed everyone who paints on whitewalls saying its lame and uncool or stupid: **** YOU! I'm an unemployed union worker with no money for anything other than keeping my house, putting food on the table, and having some change left over for my cars. I have new tires on my truck, and wanted white walls for the "look". I painted them, and now I'm gonna paint them again. And when that wears off, again and again for the life of the tires because Krylon Fusion is 3 bucks a can on sale at the hardware store, and new whites aren't in my budget. If you think I'm stupid or my tires are stupid or my 39 chevy truck that everyone on earth is building to look like the Rudy truck, **** You again! Feel free to not look at it, touch it, ride in it, or ever talk to me in person...cause I'll tell you to **** off in person too! As far as the Iron Cross goes, got those too. At least one on every car I own. Why? Cause my grandfather who taught me when I was a kid all about hot rods, lead, metal work, welding, etc....was a WW2 vet. He volunteered to fight, got shot, kept fighting at Bastone and killed as many Germans as he could. He brought home several REAL Iron Crosses which I now have today since he died 3 years ago. I know the real history on the Iron Cross in hot-rodding, I know Jesse James didn't invent it, I know Auto Zone is not the place to buy them. I also know the reason behind the spider webs too.....the prison history for what the spider web means. That doesn't make the the authority on cool or history. I'm an authority on nothing. And so are you. Unless anyone has a Doctorate and has wrote a book on a subject, you're not an authority on anything.

Lets keep this site for traditional cars and for the overall gathering of information on the subject. If you want to tell someone how uncool their idea is or what they've done to their car is stupid....get off of here and go on MYSPACE. Its free over there too and you can ***** all you want.

Thats my 2 cents and I want change back.

"Shiftymutt" he may know what hes talking about when it comes to hemis & ****.If i want to do something with a hemi, i'll ask him.
This has been a proven way to do WWW right here on the hamb, so if he gives his output & says" Get a clue & That ain't cool" guess what, him & your self should get "cool & get a clue"
Also don't let my 700 & something post think I can be bullied on here, I've been on almost 5 yrs & have about 3000 posts, but when the new format was introduced we all got cut back, Also I graduated from one of the better automotive schools in NY, Drag raced a 66 mustang at 3 differant drag strips in the NY area & won alot of trophies doing it, worked for Linc-merc for years, had my own auto repair business for 5 years, went to US NAVY diesel & othermechanical schools, was the engineman on a patrol boat in the mekong delta for a year, then started working on Machinery in manufacturing & now i'm working on industrail boilers, So i ALSO know what the **** i'm doing with a wrench, so you get a clue also!!
You will also notice that i didn't say anything about your rides!!
One other thing, how you conduct yourself is a indication of if your "kinda cool" & what you 2 did is NOT kinda cool.!!
Also enemies might come by your garage & say that but friends won't.they would tell ya nicely & work with you to improve it
You & him keep your opionions to yourself.Maybe others want them, but i don't!!
But you might be right, your the only one to come to his defence but about 8 or 9 people don't agree with ya's.
Instead of OPRAH you 2 should go on Jerry Springer!!!Then you can walk out with your palm up & Say "shut up, you don't know me"!!

Yeah but Shifty you gotta admit in the last year there have been a TON of ******** posts by guys who have signed up recently, I include myself in the recently signed in. It doesn't matter if you've been building cars forever, when you sign on here you need to post and have time so people know who you are, and if your an FNG, you need to show respect and "prove" the fact that you do know your ****. What DeSoto did was the opposite and right in line with a some recent posts on this board.
I think that is why some of the original guys don't post much anymore, too much BS and Drama...

  8. HEY JIMV...WTF are you talking about.....

I didn't bust on your ****ing car or what you did to it....I actually supported it.....this is the only post on this trhead that I talk about your tires

"Personally I like the way it looks and if your pocket book states you have to paint it well then there is nothing anyone should say...besides white walls are just white pigment ( paint/dye) rubber.... Personally I would have done the shaving bit on the tires...."

Before you go around lumping **** together maybe you should reread the post....

I was bashing the ***hats that judge a person by his post count or time on the HAMB....I don't give that any credit and that was all I was talking about....I could give a rats *** how many post you have or how long you have been on the ****ing computer....big deal....it is what you know and what I can learn that is important....

before you fly off the handle next time open your eyes....I wasn't supporting his idea of your ride I was trying to shed some light on a person and stop them from bashing a low post count guy....He doesn't like your **** that on him....He come off bad that on him....

you talk **** about me that's on you pal....But hey you are right you have been on longer than me and have a higher post count over all so I guess I have nothing to add....

I ain't trying to bully anyone on the board....anyone who knows me knows I am a lover not a fighter:D

man, someone has their ******* in a bunch!dude,if he can grab some tires and paint em and they look GOOD,which these do,get yer head outta yer *** and be happy for the guy.why does he HAVE to get REAL whitewalls just cuz YOU were stupid enough to pay for em?they look good and like has been said before,it's plenty traditional cuz back during the war you COULDNT GET WHITES.so lay off the guy.he's doing what he can and it's cool.why're ya so mad, anyways?not like they're goin thrifty on YOUR car.geez.i put PORTAWALLS on my car (oh no,let's hate ME now!) and a month later they were SLASHED.so i was happy i didnt get REAL whitewalls that would have been ruined and just had to get new cheapo tires.

Btw, Incase your asking its rattle canned flat black. Balls are red. :D

  11. Your painted whitewalls look great. My whitewalls look great. Yours cost $5 worth of paint, mine cost $1000 from Coker. We both worked within what seemed to be a reasonable budget----more power to you. That really is what rodding is all about.---Brian

Just another option for those who dont' want to spend the big bucks for widewhites. As a college student, when my '54 needed tires (I ran them until bald... haha) I couldn't afford the big buck brand either, and so being near Hershey, PA I knew of Universal Tire.

    http://www.universaltire.com/

I know they're a compe***ior to Coker, and I also know Coker is a good company, but these guys are too... haha

I bought the "universal Brand wide whites, I think they are 3.5" whites. each tire cost me somewhere between $110 and $120 for 4-ply bias, and i bought two at a time, one pair has 12,000-15,000 miles on them and still has A LOT of millage left. So this is kinda a mid-range option for those wishing to clad the white walls. After spending the last 6 years in college, there was no way i could afford an expensive tire either, and between you and me, i could give a rats' what company's name is on the sidewall... the Universal Brand has worked for me... (I'm sure coker has a 'coker' brand too)

But darned if I don't mind the painted look either, and next time, maybe I'll go that route, and spend my money on a better blackwall... thanks for the idea!

Jim your car looks great! I painted the whitewalls on my wifes T also they look good. The nice thing is if they crack or you **** up painting them you can do it over. And I have been told by many old hot rodders it's cool as hell.

  19. Well, having grown up in the 50s (the era that most of these cars are trying to evoke) I can remember some pretty hokey (where'd I come up with that word?) methods of making whitewalls, none of which looked or, apparently, held up as well as the method described here. Had Krylon been around when I was a broke kid, that's what I would've used. Now that I'm a slightly-less broke old coot, I still might.
As far as "flaming" the poor guy that started this thread...well, back off. Having worked in the automotive industry since the late 70s, I've run into all types, and I must say that the ones that were the most successful were also the most decent. The ones that had a similar at***ude to Mr. DeSoto, however adept they were, didn't stay in one place very long because they alienated everyone around them. Sort of like the thugs that gave hot rodders such a bad reputation back when.
Shortly after I found this website I posted an honest question and was immediately bombarded with profanity and put-downs (the four-letter words were the only ones spelled correctly) by an individual who looked, and judging by the at***ude, youger than most of my socks. Fortunately someone with cl*** (ELpolacko) answered my question, and I'll be doing business with him in the near future.
Please forgive me for being old enough to remember when guys in our hobby helped, encouraged, supported, and ADVISED one another, and for being young enough to use the internet.
If given a choice between having a cool car or a lot of friends, I'll take friends every time. But why not have both?
I'll probably get hammered for this post, but I've been around "at***udes" for a long time. I've survived worse.

Boy !! For an *** my opinion sure made a Rukus !!!! I didnt think that the quan***y of posts or how long you been on the HAMB was so important in the Hot Rod world of today.

Me and shifty had our 'bout .. true ... but i anint got nuthin against him, Hell, if i drank id shoot him a beer at the next show.

I'd do the same for any of you if you were to come up at a show, but i never have alcohol, so maybe a Mt Dew .....

Maybe i do come off harsh, and maybe i am an ***, But thats me boys !! No sugar coated fake ******** ...

I see some of you guys are older in years and have been around the block, but just cus ive only graced yer hallowed HAMB for a few months dont mean im new to the game.

I am only 40, dad gave me an engine to "PLAY" with when i was 4, had my first car when i was 14, and have had about 400 since. (parts, runners,& sellers combined)

I just feel that when you build a car, you should do your best to build it to the best possible car you can, and takeing shortcuts like this, in MY opinion, makes the car look cheap, but then why should i care, it aint mine !!

So, in short, to the man who started this thread, I will say im sorry for bashing your idea, its your car and your right to do anything you want to it.

I guess I just figure that Hot Rods should be built with character & style ... I am all about unique Engines and attention to the past..

But i still dont like painted whites, iron cross, or spider webs !! :D

Have they gone "yellow" like Cokers?

  28. TWO things. ONE: if the tree falls and noone hears it, did it really make a sound? Translation: If you paint your whites, they look good, noone can tell, is it then still a bad idea? (i'll go with no). TWO: what about SEM vinyl dye???? It's made to stick to **** like this and also made to be flexible.
