My stock 8.8 inch rear end has met it's maker, after 53 years, so I'm up-grading to a 9 inch. I'm running a 302 with an AOD transmission. I believe my stock gears were 4.11:1 -- nice off the line, but not too practical for the freeway. Although with the OD I was able to cruise at freeway speeds. I was wondering if anyone knows/has an opinion about which gears would work best with an AOD. This is a purely street car, but I still would like decent power off the line -- you know, just in case PS It'll be a posi/track lock rear either way. Thanks in advance.
richmondgear.com http://richmondgear.com/101032.html use the calculator to decide how you drive/ tire size/ where the powerband is/ desired cruising rpm.
Depends on your engine setup and the height of your tires. With a 26"ish tire height...3.70ish gears are the best IMO. Will turn about 2300-2400 at 75 mph in 4th with and AOD (O/D = 0.68 btw).
Thanks for the link, 53Sled. That calculator is pretty usefull. Yeah, 3.70 gears seem to be pretty popular. A friend of mine is going to build it for me, but the gear sets he has are either 3.89 or 3.50. One's seems too tall and the other too short.
