I built this engine years ago
and honestly don't remember..

Hey Paul, do you remember what paint you used to paint your engine? I like the rich gold color. The gold on mine looks kinda faded and it hasn’t made it out of the shop yet.

 

Sounds good! Does your mag have the advance mechanism?

 

Engine paint is One Shot 109-L Metallic Gold.
It does change color from heat, the more cooked it gets the more bronze it gets.

Yes this magneto has advance, not fixed.

 

Spray bomb undercoat and set body back on frame to locate a few penetrations, throttle linkage, wiring, etc.

I stared butchering my pile of crap together yesterday using the plans you sent me. Thanks!

 

another (hopefully) minor glitch yesterday,
tried to put it in gear with engine running.. no go..
plenty of throw for disengagement
goes in and out of gear as it should with engine off
rolls easy in neutral and when in gear with clutch depressed.

whatever it is it means a bit of tear down to fix.

LOL we all have a "Mary" hanging around now don't we. Just hooked up my MC/CS yesterday and bled it off. Next on the list is to see if it will go into gear as well. The very same set up also! Now I am a bit nervous

 

Well, I must have been too ready for something serious..
turned out to be about as minor as it could be.
Simply just a bit of adjustment.
Pedal was pushing throw out bearing too far.
Backed it out a bit and all is good.

It moves under its own power.

 

Brushes and spray bombs rule .... pure Hot Rod.

 

If it was easy, everybody would be building them.

Minor distraction,
I'm using a C10 column with a '62 Olds wheel
Truck signal arm was short and crusty,
Scored a '64 Olds signal arm,
cut the threaded end off the Olds,
cut the tab off the Chevy,
weld the tab to the Olds arm.
Sand and polish.
'probably just hit it with clear to keep it from rusting..

Nice touch on the directional signal arm! Meant to ask a while back about your choice of 1/4 brake lines instead of 3/16. Do you find an advantage to having more volume with the larger lines?

 

I used 1/4" because that's what the master, clutch slave and front cylinders used from the factory, and 3/16" only on the rear axle because that's what the rear cylinders took.
I was more concerned with matching master and slave bores than line volume.

 

Larger lines doesn't push more volume to the wheel cylinders, it just holds more volume in the line. Doesn't really matter what size as long as the fitting at the ends fit right.

 

Looks great, the bottom is so clean it is a shame it is hidden!

 

Worked on the throttle pedal and linkage yesterday.
I wanted to keep the stock '58 stick belcrank because of its relative rarity
but it needs a push action from the pedal
and wasn't going to work with the pedal I had in mind.
So I added a ball pivot to the throttle shaft bracket for a pull action,
drilled the bracket for a return spring,
and modified the dashpot bracket to take the other end of the spring.
Eliminating the belcrank and dashpot.
And fabbed up a simple pedal.
I will modify or replace the pedal pad with something that will slide easier on the foot,
Something spoonish.. maybe..

Looks like a highschool metal shop Moon style bigfoot , but it fits, barely, and feels better under foot.

 

Redoing the headers.
Kewpie Doll style collectors and
side one starting to take shape.

 

Those look really nice! To me they look much more finished than the original pipes. Plus this way you can decide if you want to baffle them or not.
