Thursday night is adult beverage night at the shop... http://www.hotrodch***isandcycle.com Elmhurst has a big cruise night on Wed. http://www.elmhurst.org/culture/coolcars.asp
You got to stop in to this burger joint. Made famous by saturday night live "burger, burger, burger, no coke pepsi" Chicago also has the best bars around. Billy Goat Tavern 430 N Michigan Ave Chicago, IL 60611 312-222-1525
thanks 392 hemi i just got back, you dont see that sort of thing in the hollers of tennessee, but seriously that is the kind of stuff that i am interested in the history of time and place. i can walk across from the hotel and see the urban outfitter and starbucks but i want to see the history, thats perfect. now i will try to take everything else in. keep em coming i got 5 more days now i am going to find some of that famous chicago pizza, it aint beans, cornbread and sweet tea but hopefully it will do. thanks to all ya'll that responded. rowdy
If your interested in history and want to see Chicago from a different point of view, try the architectural river boat tour at night. This is a Chicago must see!If you time it right on Wednesday or Saturday nite you may even take in the fireworks at Navy Pier from the boat. I believe the tours start at Michigan Ave. and Wacker Drive . I'm unsure of times and departure points but check with your hotel they should be able to provide the correct info. Chicago has many pizza places and each Chicagoan has their favorites . Try Giordano's located though out the city, Pizzeria Uno at Ohio and Wabash . Remember Chicago has the largest Polish population outside of poland. Try some of the Polish restaurants on Milwaukee ave, or come out on Archer Ave.to Bobaks or Szalas both just east of Cicero ave Chinatown can also be interesting The Golden Phoenix has a great Dim Sum for lunch just north of 22nd street on Archer Ave. Dont forget that history is in all its glory at the Art Ins***ute, the Field Museum,(King Tut's in town)the Science and Industry Museum,Shedd Aquarium. You can purchase a discount ticket p*** that will get you into all. In for a little ride try the Chicago Botanic Gardens on Lake Cook Road & RT 41. There are cruise nites all over, check www.stoweautobody.com for dates and times in in the car show heading . Goodguys is in Waukesha Wi. ( near Milwaukee ) is this Friday /Sunday. If you have any questions drop a PM or call the office 773-585-8900. Larry
Ed Debevic's is a MUST SEE for lunch. Make sure the waiter/waitress gives you the special HAMB pricing.
If you dig punk rock, go to the exit 1315 north ave. chicago il. The best punk bar in Chicago , if not the midwest. I second Wood fire chicken cruse night, Lots of traditional rides to see there.
i will be trying ed debevic's for lunch, i saw the boat tour and was wondering if it would be worth a ****. sounds like i might give that a try, i have to work today but wednesday may be a good day for a boat tour, so far everyone has seemed extremely friendly, that is more than i expected being in a big city, but am pleasantly surprised. rowdy
I second the boat tour - it's awesome. And, I would visit Prairie Ave. (althought they've built NEW homes now ) http://www.cityofchicago.org/Landmarks/P/PrairieAveDistrict.html Here's a list of "historical" places: http://www.cityofchicago.org/Landmarks/Tours/Tours.html And, one of the coolest cemeteries EVER - a lot of famous Chicagoans are buried in elaborate tombs here (Pullman is buried UNDER railroad ties to keep his workers from digging up his body and desecrating it): http://www.gracelandcemetery.org/ Al Capone's hotel is long gone, but the Green Mill (one of the bars he frequented) is still there: http://www.greenmilljazz.com/ Thursday night some of us will be @ the Horseshoe - 4115 N. Lincoln - good BBQ and Little Esther and Her Tin Stars are playing. Saturday, some of us will be @ the Cheaters car show in Milwaukee. Food wise - Chicago has a bit of everything. I recommend Giordano's for pizza - there's one not too far from the Knickerbocker. Also, Wiener Circle for a hot dog experience unlike any other. Just don't ask for KETCHUP! http://chicago.citysearch.com/profile/3677757 And last but not least, it's not "in" Chicago, but it's a Friday night cruise stop: http://www.superdawg.com/
You're in an excellent location to choose from some great Chicago experiences. I used to live in this area, so here are some of my favorite places that hold up to the test of time. These are all a short cab ride from you, or even walking distance. For awesome Chicago pizza, you gotta go to Pizzeria Due on 619 N Wabash For awesome Prime Rib, go to Lawry's on 100 E. Ontario (that's the NW corner of Michigan Ave and Ontario). An expensive but memorable dinner! For awesome Thia food, go to the Star of Siam on 11 E. Illinois (just east of State Street on Illinois). Cheap dining and relaxed atmosphere For cheap beer and awesome local ambiance, go to Rossi's bar on 412 N State (damn near Star of Siam) For the late-night munchies ('till 4am!), awesome Chicago-style Hot Dogs and awesome local ambience, go to the Weiner's Cicle at 2622 N. Clark For breakfast, go to the Original Pancake House at 2020 N. Lincoln Park Ave OR Lou Mitchells at 565 W Jackson Blvd. The Chicago River Architect tour is very cool and worth the time and money. Chicago has a killer music scene. It's diverse and easy to tap into. If you love live music, then pick up a Chicago Reader newpaper beginning Thursday afternoon. These are free newpapers and there is an entire section in there on Music and the Arts in Chicago. You can find these at most retail places in the area where you are at. Or, go to the Star of Siam (above) for late lunch or dinner on Thursday and get one hot off the press at the Chicago Reader office, in the same building as Star of Siam. The Chicago Reader will give you a mind-numbing amount of information as to the who. what, and where of live music while you are in town. Have an awesome time in Chicago. We're a bunch of good folks! And.....GO TO WOODFIRE THIS SATURDAY NIGHT!! Look for me in my silver '56 Coupe DeVille and tell me about all the fun that you had while here in town.
Superdawg IS in Chicago! And, a nice, low-at***ude cruise. If you want to catch the beginning of that cruise, start in Rosemont at the McDonalds at Higgins & River. On second thought, it's supposed to rain on Friday night... but any other friday...
Why not just get drunk? Best bars along Lincoln, Clark, Southport; Division St west of Milwaukee Ave; Bucktown area (Milwaukee/Damen/North Ave intersection). Green Mill is a must-see. For vintage tiki action try Hala Kahiki, River Grove (second best Tiki bar in US). Good tunes at Fitzgeralds in Berwyn. Saturday take the 80 mile trip north on I94 to Milwaukee for the Cheaters Show! East on Layton Ave exit all the way to Nite Owl Drive In. Cheateriffic!
At Ed Debevics, they have some pictures of WHERE TO GO in Chicago. Ask the staff if you don't find them. They ARE good! Enjoy!
Ed Debevics is a tourist trap made up to look like a 50s diner. They have a few of them in the burbs, too. The original Billy Goat may have been cool, but they've morphed into a tourist trap as well and have many franchises all over the city and suburbs. The archetectural river boat tour is pretty good. Dez is right, the Green Mill is great for Jazz, and Super Dawg is a vintage 1948 hot dog drive in with car hops. There are a few Frank Lloyd Wright houses around. The Bahai Temple in Winnetka is impressive. Drinking beer at HRCC would be fun. If you take Irving PArk all the way out it will save you the frustration of sitting in traffic on 290 barely moving. Saturday afternoon is the Cheaters' show up in Milwaukee. That's a 1.5 hour drive and well worth it. VERY good show. It may seem cheesy, but there's a bar and restaurant on top of the Han**** building right down the street from you. The bar is expensive, but you get a great view of the lake and city.
i have eaten about 60 meals in the 3 days i have been here and almost drowned my liver but i am still going and i have 3 days left, i am off to the green mills to see if they are telling the truth about that cold beer. but honestly, everyone i have met has gone out of there way to help out a lowly countryboy from tennessee, it has made me reconsider my yankee no thank ye policy. thanks for all of the info so far out again, rowdy
The servers there are mostly actors/actresses and if you get the right one the place can be a riot. Did you see the "places to go in Chicago" by the restrooms? They have pictures of the porcaline in the Wrigly building, the Merchandise Mart, Wrigly field, etc. etc. etc. Ya GOTTA love potty humor! Glenn
Giordano's pizza was worth the walk, Chicago is a pretty cool town, but we got better tunes! and apparently, theres a north/south thing that people get REALLY offended if you mention the wrong team. I don't get it.
I also second the shop (HRCC), but I'm biased. We are located in the old factory portion of Addison, and our building is historic in that it was built just after WWII. I suppose that's historic. For pizza, go to My pie(the greek pi sign) on the east side of clark just north of Fullerton. Looks like a 60's ski lodge inside. Pitcher of Bergoff Dark and a pie. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
