I'm from Osage (NE Iowa), went to tech school in Calmar NE Iowa Tech and somehow ended up in So. Texas. Do go back once a year or so to see family and EAT - best steak, pork and sweet corn that I've ever had.
Hey purple5window, are you named after a channelled '32? I remember seeing a channelled '32 five-window for sale in Madrid (or Slater?) for sale probably 15 or 20 years ago. Was an original '50's build that had JUST had it's old Ford drivetrain taken out and a SBC installed. Still had the lavenderish paint and I think white upholstery. Is that your car?!? I hope that car has survived in it's original guise.
Scooter, You been to Muscatine ?!? That's where me and gaspumps are from. Well technically I am from a place called "the Island". Before the river dams were put in place and the river was "controlled" by man - the area I grew up in was literally an island on the Mississippi River. Of course that predates me by a few decades or so. The Island is widely known for it's delicious watermelon. The sandy soil and the strangely isolated climate make for kick-ass super sugery sweet watermelon and cantelope. Also of note - we used to have two really old Maid-Rite stands. We still have two, but one is brand spanking new (with prices that reflect the newness). The other is the one of the old ones and they make an awesome Maid-Rite burger, really good tender loins, and some of the best root beer you've ever had. Years ago there was a drive-in restaurant called the "Cheri Top". They made the best damn tenderloins anyone has ever had - bar none. The owner burnt the place down to get insurance money (got busted). They rebuilt the place, but it isn't as good as it once was. They still serve some good food and it's still an old fashioned drive-in complete with car hop waitresses (young and perky ). They also serve a "Shirley Temple" (Cheri Sprite) that tastes like the old soda jerk style cherry drinks. YUMMY! You can usually see a neat hot rod or muscle car sitting in the lot on a weekend - drinkin' a malt or having a cone (with the staple cherry on top). I wish I was loaded - the place has tons of potential, they just don't have the follow thru to make it a homerun. Could be one of the coolest little drive-ins in IA if it was run right.... .....ohh and I take offense to the sheep fucker jokes, I only know ONE guy who fucked a sheep....and he didn't even like it.
riverrat here formerly of wilton ia. now from clayton ia.in the beautiful n. east will never live anywhere else. riverrat
Oh shit Brothers, better throw RASHy in the mix... I was born in Woodstock, Illinois when my parents lived in Chicago. My brother was born a year and a half later in Woodstock, Illinois when we lived in Rhilander(SP?) Wisconson. Both born on the road. Maybe that says something? Anyways, we moved to Dubuque, IOWA when I was starting first grade, to get away from my dad. Lived there until fate got us stuck in Tulsa when I was 14. Been here ever since and I'm not leaving. My best memories of IOWA? The smell, come on guys, you know it smells like hogs or corn. Love the smell of corn when it's just ripening in the sun. Not so much the smell of hogs ripening in the sun. Walking across the Julien Dubuque Bridge to East Dubuque, ILL. Shot Tower Pizza. Fourth Street The Dubuque Packing plant. We used to take our poor little selves in there and the women behind the counter would give us stacks of miscuts.. Watching the Lock and Damn (#9?) from up above at Eagle Rock Park. Florence Park.
Maid Rite has cruises every Wednesday nite here. 1/2 off your bill if your in a classic car. Dude you gotta get back here soon. Your uncle Jerry is out of control, always trying to get me in trouble.
I'm a couple miles from West Branch, Ia. Three and a half acres, no hogs, five cars, eight trucks, three bikes, and one old schoolbus.
Live in Ames, IA, originally from Omaha, NE Been here for 6 years and I am starting to really like the smaller town living.

I was born and raised in Davenport but I escaped in 1961 and spent most of the '60s and '70s in Orange County California and Bakersfield until the mid '80s when I moved here to Mesa, Arizona. Haven't even been back to Iowa to visit family and friends since the late '70s.
Betcha didn't know the movie star Donna Reed was born and raised in Denison, Iowa...she was born DonnaBelle Mullenger and I went to HS with her younger sister...Denison is now home to the Donna Reed Festival & museum...as well as a great county fair and stock car races. R-

HAA!!! I heard about the rumble with the cops and that car club in Illinois... was that some of the trouble? BTW... I saw pictures last night of our old '41 Studebaker that Jerry fixed up... that thing looks SOOO good for having sat in my Grandfather's barn for about 40 years with bird crap and moth destruction! I'll try to dig up some before pictures. BTW... I've been meaning to show him my Model A pics. Do you have his email? PM it to me if you do... THANKS!
YUP! Been to Muscatine... A lot of my family is still there including my Uncle Jerry (with the 41 Stude, gaspumps will tell you), some cousins, etc... Last time I was there I went to some bar "down town" where a couple of my cuz's hang out. Didn't know and ran into them totally out of coincidence. Anyway, yeah I know about the Cherry Top. Didn't know it burnt though. Remember driving by it when I was little. Can't remember if I ever went there though... Yup, been to your stomping grounds...
Rashy... did you ever here of an indoor skate park called "Rampage" that used to be a bowling alley and was owned by a couple BMX guys? I used to skate there.
Just West of D-buque off I-80 I think. Can't remember the exact location... Ya' know, I just had a thought... that may have been Davenport, not the other D-town. DOH! It is! Sorry! http://www.skateboardparks.com/iowa/rampage/index.html Continue with your last thoughts before my mental blunder...
WOW. Its great to see so many people from IOwa. I grew up in walnut. Southwest right on I-80. then moved to ames in 2001 to go to iowa state and was there until last august. NOw i am in austin texas. my wife and I plan on moving back to iowa or minnesota where she is from in the next year. I just can't get away from the midwest. There is just something about it that just brings people back.
No that's not me mine is a 52 chevy five window pickup. Its not traditional but i still have tons of fun with it dEVIN
When I was in Iowa last month they had a small car show at the Burt 125 year celebration..there were a couple nice cars, a chopped work in progress Merc, and 34 chevy truck like I own there...just curious if any HAMBERS were there...I was thinking about it as I was looking at the cars....joe
Hell yeah I've heard of RAMPAGE. A bunch of my friends are big into BMX and know Rick (the guy that owned it). Thats another cool Iowa story, the Standard Byke Co. headquarters is located in the Quad cities (on the Iowa side). They are one of the best BMX frame mfgrs on the market today. Last I heard he bought a building in downtown D-town and he still owns Goodtimes Superstore. I've never met him personally but he sounds like a pretty cool guy from everyone that I've talked to that knows him.
Oh yeah - born and raised in Des Moines and have never got around to leaving. Graduated from Roosevelt in 1999, Drake in 2003 and have held a job and owned a house here ever since. I think about leaving (mostly because of the winters) but I like the people and the revitalization thats happening in Des Moines right now is amazing. I've traveled around this world a lot and have never seen a city re-newing itself like Des Moines has. Finding non rusted vehicles is also kind of a challenge but thats pretty minor in the long run.
I am originally from Iowa City. I escaped and moved to rural Riverside (15 miles south) in 93. I have 50 some old cars on the corner of my acreage and NO ONE CARES! The best part.....I put them there and still NO ONE CARES! Carmak 57 Cadillac 68 Coronet 440 wagon "I'm not in the middle of nowhere, but you can see it form here"
