When did they start putting seatbelts in most vehicles? Im hoping to drive my 47 in a week and a half for my wedding but didnt know if i had to have seatbelts in it. I will eventually put seatbelts in it. atleast lap belts i was just wondering for the time being do i have to have them???
I know that in the state of Oklahoma, all vehicles manufactured prior to 1968 are exempt from current seat belt laws. You will need to check with whatever canadian governing body sets such regulations. Perhaps another cheese eating, job stealing, horse riding, hockey playing, "eh" saying canuck will be on here and know what the canadian law on it is. P.S. Just kidding about the canuck stiff
Seatbelts were installed by the factory in about 1963 or 1964...I have heard of instances where belts were special ordered in cars as early (late?) as 1957...but those are rare instances. Your '47 was not equipped with belts from the factory...so go ahead and drive it to the wedding...I know of no US state that has restrictions/laws covering cars going back that far... R-
I think you will have to check your local laws. I know my 63 ss chevy 2 never came with them and the guy I got it from was a retired police officer. He gave me some papers that say if my car never had them from the factory I do not have to put them in it. I am not sure if that stays true if you modify the car or not. But my car still does not have them , And I do not plan to add them in the future
naw it's called the grand father clause you don't need them. especially in alberta the most relaxed laws in our great country think it's the only province you can still run fenderless with out being h***eled Al
if it didn't have it factory you don't need it.my 61 is beltless and Ky will let it slide because of the year.not sure about your state but I'd say its the same
you wont get a ticket. dont worry. cars in the 40's werent built to go fast and no one thought about what happens in an accident. so your cool.
Just skip em....then you can have a great story to tell your grandkids about the day you got married and got four hundred s***ches in your face when you rearended your new mother in law on the way to the reception!!!!!....They'll laugh till they piss their pants....PRICELESS!!!!!
Soft cushy dash pads and horn ****ons, collaspable steering columns, side marker lights/reflectors and, yes, seatbelts all became standard equipment in 1968 via federal mandated safety requirements for all new cars that year. Your all set with the '47. You don't HAVE to have them but its a smart thing to have anyway. -Bigchief.
Here in Washington. If your car is stock and it didn't come with them your cool. If you have modifieded it from the way it was sold new you have to upgrade to a third eye level brake light and seat belts If it is a Modified ***le. IE 2006 ***embled 47 Chevy.
I'm pretty sure that they were required in all seats in US cars starting in 1966...same year that backup lights, etc were required. AZ law says that people 18 and older need to wear a seat belt in cars made after the 1972 model year, or somesuch. I put them in my old cars anyways.....after working at a junkyard as an impressionable teenager....
Good answer, actually ford was the first to offer a seat belt option in 1955. and the same year they brought safety door latches, neat thing on the latches ford thought they were so good that they didn't patent them so every manufacturer was free to build their own. it was a great advertising success! Also 1955 was the year Ford went public. until then it was a family business
I think 1966 and up in Cali. I was told if someone has installed some in an older car you should be wearing them.
sounds good thanks guys...Im from Washington and the truck is as well. The truck is registered in WA still so as far as i know its what the law is where its registered so from the sounds of it im safe as is.
Heres a couple pics of the truck as of tonight. The major things gotta get done is get my drive shaft cut. get some flatgl*** in for the windshield, and bleed the brakes. Just ran my lines tonight so probably have some adjustment to do possibly as well.
By the sounds of things I thougth your car was in original condition and you were enquiring weather you had to up date it ....but from the pics I can see your putting a lot of effort into hot rodding/customising it...why WOULDN'T you want to put seat belts in it?? Get a set of re-pro lap belts and install em...cost ya next to nothing and take a couple of hours work..
sounds good paul...I figured on putting atleast lap belts in there. I do want to be safe. I was just wondering just for the weekend just incase i got pulled over.
http://www.gotbelts.com/laponlybelts.html 14 bucks, isn't your new wife's face worth it? I am still in pain from a wreck 17 years ago w/no seat belt, gl*** slivers were coming out of my face a year later.
Put the seat belts in. Morally, you're obligated to do so. Get into what could have been a minor accident, dump your new bride out on the street and her ending up dead will have an impact on your life you can't begin to imagine.
Far as I know, anything after '65 needs belts up here. If they're there you gotta use em too. Kinda looks like the car in front of you could watch T.V in their rear view. hehe
Like the man says, "Better to be safe than sorry." If your short on time, (to order from above) hit your local salvage yard and pick out a set of lap style belts from something. Older Honda seat belts separate the shoulder belt from the lap belt - as I'm sure others do - so you could cut off the shoulder belt portion; or tuck it behind the seat and work on finding an anchor point for the shoulder belt another day. To get you underway, just mount the lap anchors with BIG plate washers above and below the floor boards. (I would use GR 8 bolts)
sounds good and sounds like my minds been made up...seatbelts it is thanks rdaugird for putting it that way. and P.S. thats just the quick fix on the grill just something to hold the rad in so i can drive it. Im trying madly to find a front end with a nice grill style and some big fat fenders since i used the fronts on the back. lol.
