Technical Muffler suggestions for SBF

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by VANDENPLAS, Sep 21, 2021.

  1. Hey guy got my 40 Ford going , rebuilt the carb , fixed a couple vacuum leaks fluids and she’s on the road.

waiting for a swap meet at the end of October to find some goodies for her.

but in the meantime I need to swap out the mufflers. She’s to damn loud !!!!!
With the AOD once it shift to second and stays in lower rpm it has a loud drone that drives me nuts !!!

It’s a 4 door cruiser , not a drag car !! Right now it sounds like a glorified Honda .

I want it quite when cruising , it’s got a cam and headers so it will have a decent sound to it anyways .

Other then going with a stock 92 mustang muffler what are my other options ?

Here’s a pic cause things are always better with a pic .

I used flow masters on Brenda's Ranch Wagon, it has a 302 and you can hear it running in this video. HRP

  3. HRP your car and Mrs.HRP are perfect !!!

that’s what my car sounds like at idle , it’s the DROOOOOOOONNNNNNNNEEEEE when cursing that drives me nuts !!

like I said once it shifts to high gear and the rpm drops it’s just wrrrrrrhhhhhhhhooooooooooooooo !!!!

    not nice at all !

Magnaflow, they’re quiet unless you step on it. Really nice quality too, and sound great.

If you can I think a “mid” muffler sounds better than behind the axle but I don’t know where you can fit a muffler.

I've got a set of Porters on my Model A (nailhead). Nice sound, relatively quiet when not on it, and no droning at cruise speeds.

  7. My Buick, with Smithy gl*** packs, does not droan and moan. Mufflers mounted mid frame with pipes to 1 inch past bumper. Had a Dodge PU with 40 series Flowmasters that drove me nuts.

I can't get Corvair Turbo Mufflers out of my head I've heard it so many times over the years...I think they carry turbos at Canadian Tire for a reasonable price...personally I've had mixed success with the Modern Mufflers...I'm on my second set due to the db's...I even have Car Chemistry silencers installed aft the muffler and I have a mellow 90+ decibels rattling my eardrums...yeah it sounds good but I would welcome something under 85db so I could ditch the earplugs...

I had Flow Master 2 chamber mufflers on my 48 F1 truck with a 302/AOD and had a similar experience to you, too much noise / drone. I later installed inexpensive turbo mullers that were better but after about ten years I got tired of the noise level. Recently I installed Walker Quiet-Flow Mufflers and they are quiet but still have a nice sound and don't drone.

Pipes exit all the way out past the rear bumper?
    All hangers are rubber isolated?

If both of those hold true the simple and not expensive. fix might be a pair of short gl*** packs between the rear axle and the tail pipes in a similar fashion to the resonators at the back of almost every 60's full Ford cars.

I've used Borla mufflers on several cars, they aren't too loud.

  13. Put a sharp bend in the tail pipes behind the mufflers. I don't know if 22 degrees will do it but I know around 45 will kill the drone. A guy who does diesel trucks told me this. It made all the difference in the system. The pipes on my 32 were straight. I put the bend in them and ran them behind the rear wheels. End of story. :)

My ‘32 has 302 X grind cam and bullet gl*** packs ( cherry bombs ) . Most of the time the gl*** packs give the sound of a Harley 45 that has a miss ! Pop pop pop , these seem to do very well to date , the ‘48 truck had same engine and cam with 2 chamber flow masters . It was sweet

  16. Do you have tailpipes or just dumps? Lots can change with pipes out the back, and a few bends like suggested.

Just installed Walker Quiet Floes on my 55 behind my 300 hp 302, great sound, not loud. Bad thing is now I can hear the rear end whine I never heard before.

  18. I'm with you VANDENPLAS, I don't need to announce my noise capabilities to the world, and the drone gets old real quick. I like the sound of stock M@&*@ng mufflers, but getting the pipes to rear really helps.

think I’ll try the walker quite flows

I was kinda wondering how the heck you're gonna choose with so many ****ogies of different brands...I struck out twice...

Silver lining is the old cherry bombs rattled my brains...these just make my ears ring...:)

Mine are welded to the down pipes...so on top of the expense of buying twice they had to be cut off and rewarded...$$$...so it's earplugs for me...I don't know how Jerry drove it with just open Lakes pipes...
