Has anyone seen any or have pictures of a Willys Jeep pickup late 40's to mid 50's chopped and sittin on the ground? A friend that has been into Jeeps now wants to build a hotrod and for him this might be the best of both worlds. Any input? Thanks
in my opinion they are best left as jeeps.. i've seen some hotrod built out of em but they we'ren't too pretty.. those old trucks are pretty cool in their own right, why f with em... there is plenty of other tin laying around...
Not neccisarily "chopped and dropped", but here is a picture of my old Willys P/u. It was a fun little truck.
it might look cooler if you chopped it and then sectioned it to i know someone who is thinkin of buildin one fenderless real low and probalby sectiones or the bottom of the doors cut off
They are a tough thing to get right. First off the cab is WAAAY too wide to make a fenderless "Death Rod" out of. I took about 10" out of the middle of mine...and a bunch out of the top. It was a piece of trash to begin with..... ....and I'm determined to make something relatively cool out of it. I would NEVER NEVER cut up a nice Willys Jeep truck to do this with. Its just NOT worth it. Too much work..... Much easier to start with a cab that looks better in the first place. Now, having said all that....I'm still working on this...I'm in love with it...I don't care how ugly it is. I like it.
Tingler, I love the Farmall grill on your Jeep, great overall concept I would have never thought of doing a Hot Rod Jeep. Around here mostly they are jacked up 20 ft off the ground and used for muddin' I saw this lowered Jeep pick up at Starbirds place in OK several years ago and thought is was cute lowered. I photochopped it to see what a chop would look like...cowl seems a bit too large in proportion to the windsheld. Johnny Angel
I chopped two of these Jeeps for David Tyler from Alton Ill a few years ago..... The wagon was cut 5-Rto 6F" and the truck was cut also 5-6". He has since passed on and I do not know their whereabouts now...... Here is the wagon If you do it I recommend a 1" difference frt to rear so it dont look "mashed". I also took the windshield down at its lower side till it was level with the door glasses and lowered the dash that amount too.....
Tingler,I said it the first time I seen pics and I'll say it again.that thing is bad ass.I like it.need to find you an ol' German helmet with the spike sticking out of the top of it and turn it into a breather for the engine.
I just had 3 inches taken out of mine.Took two inches out of the radius in the cowl and the other inch out of the front window. This was so that I could get the side windows to match the front window.
Not to hijack, but anyone ever put a flathead ford V8 in an otherwise stock one? Did there used to be an adapter as I've seen a few of them advertised this way. I plan to get a wagon in the next few months & will put a flatty in it to replace the go-devil 4 or hurricane 6. Just wanted to see if there was something that would save me a bit of work... To get back on topic, I think they look best left alone, but I have seen some nice rodded ones...
I prefer them unchopped, although chopped with the windshield dropped into the cowl looks pretty good. I was pondering make'n em taller rather than shorter here......... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=116601
