My sons Rambler project is about ready for tires. I’ve used bfg radial t/a’s on my projects but they are a bit expensive for his budget. The tires we have looked at have terrible looking sidewalls so we need a few suggestions on brands that have a decent looking sidewall.

Cooper has some you can give them a look, don’t know your budget, under a hundred each you should have a few choices.

  3. If you're okay with regular radials, get some cheap ones and smooth out the sidewall with a sander. Search tire grinding on here......just don't go too far with the sanding.

I went with Hankooks on my Ford, 15" and I'm happy with them.

Over here (east coast) we have Tire Warehouse, they carry name brand and not so name brand tires. The not so brands are reasonable. Maybe you have a discount tire store over there, good luck and let us know how you made out

Master craft is a subsidiary of Cooper tire. Cooper tire is a subsidiary of Goodyear.

See if you have a tire dealer that sells blems.,
Sure some here may remember them. They were tires That had blemishes such as the serial number not being able to Be read correctly. Not sure they are sold anymore but they were brand new brand name tires with no warranty and cheap. A local Amoco dealer sold them for the entire sales district

I’m running Hancooks as well. Ride great.
Looks? Well if ya don’t like em you can always DA sand em smooth.
I don’t know of any cheap tire that looks like what most of us feel look “proper”

I like to go to this site and shop tires by size or by diameter, see what is available, than shop on Amazon or Wally World. I've bought several tires of Amazon, had them shipped directly to a local tire dealer and had them mounted there. It works pretty slick.

  20. I order mine. I’ve been spoiled by having the equipment to mount and balance my own for the past 30 years

Hancooks on my coupe, 225 75 R15 on 7" wide wheels.. Good tires for the money. Got about 8,000 miles on them still look great. There is a design on the sidewalls, but its not very pronounced. Could be sanded smooth if you desire.

I’ve switched from BFG to Cooper on most everything I own. Not as expensive, look just as good or better, and seem to last just as long.

  24. What looks "good", what looks "proper"? Pretty subjective I expect.

    Hello,

In your case, it may be different. But, when our son had his first car, was still living in our house and under our care/guidance. It was our responsibility to get the best tire WE would want for his car. Safety and longevity was the key and we had our choices, much like you. If you have a favorite brand that you wanted and feel that it is a good choice, get them. You and your wife will feel safer at night and when your son is on the road at any time.

You won’t worry about off brand names or old tires, just because they are cheap. Used tires are a no, they are like mag wheels, you never know how or why they are the way they are. The former owner will tell you after they clean up those tires that they are good. Off brand tires are still less expensive, but at what cost in development versus the top name company’s products?

The off brand names and blems that other people have or suggesting are their choices. Low cost is not the best as the development of tires being m*** produced under who knows what/how. If you feel those BFG Radial T/A tire are what you and your wife would want for your son’s car, get them. You both will feel good later. Having a history with tires you have used, had great driving and handling, that is what you would want for your son’s first road car. Blems? Want to relay on a factory error for safety’s sake? No cost is worth that scenario.

Our son had his car, the tires had 18k on them and were wearing funny, out of balance, alignment, and rode terribly. But, the car was his choice and we just helped him get it safe and road reliable. The former owner was from Texas, had a new job in So Cal. In talking to her, she did not know anything about the car, other than it got her to work and back.

Her company in So Cal gave her a new job, new position/***le and new sporty sedan for the company car. Now, she wanted to get rid of her old car she bought in Texas. Yes, it had Texas size dents in the trunk and roof, from big hail balls. But, it was not noticeable unless you were a judge at a car show.

The car needed a complete tune up, new tires, balance, alignment and front shocks. The brakes were ok as were the rear shocks. But, at least new tires were needed, so, we got what was the best we could want for safety of our teen driver. The proliferation of off brand name tires was just getting started and there was a difference in quality and long life. We just stuck to our choice of brand name tires and felt secure about the decision. Money is not an issue, if safety is concerned… YRMV

  29. Don't know what you may have in Soud Dakota, but in the western coastal states we have a chain called Les Schwab that has a complete range of tire prices, types, tread designs, performance ratings, etc. I usually check there first, mainly because of their after-sale service, which includes free rotation, rebalance, as well as a good warranty policy. As the car 'herd' gets larger it's kind of nice not to have to handle everything yourself.
