History Honestly, Would You Pay $349 For A Club Plaque?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by quick85, Aug 18, 2021.

  1. I would pay a lot if I really wanted it for a collection but on another note I couldn’t run one on a car that I wasn’t or hadn’t been a member of ,= bad JuJu
    Imho .

Thank you! I understand that stuff seems to have astronomical prices but that is where we are at. Inflation is real. People talk more poo on my price then to contact me and find out what's the situation. I have sold these three items while my thread sounds like a girls locker room with lady's talking trash. Don't like don't buy, or throw an offer. It's the internet, you won't get out chef in the eye

^^ You've voiced the simplest solution...Don't like the price? Don't buy it.
Still, that doesn't end the crazy craving for the kool old stuff. I do without
in many cases because I just can't justify the cost. I may have the cash to
easily purchase something but that doesn't mean I'm going to piss it away
on a memory. BUT, I don't begrudge anyone doing just that.

I guess at this point, my question would be if you actually had anything to contribute to the HAMB or are you just here to use this as a retail outlet?
It's pretty clear your only interest is in the money.

American Pickers has driven the cost over the top of everything that is anything. Plaques as an example. I think they have their place in most car variety collections. I have none and really don't look for them, mainly because growing up in my region there were no car clubs, just cop's with clubs looking for our cars.

Ah, American Pickers. I saw at least two episodes where Mike paid $10.00
for one and $20.00 for another. Two instances where he didn't mention to
the sellers the potential dollars they could really bring in, then again, I
    wouldn't have, either.

As a matter of fact, after seeing both of those episodes I tried getting
in touch with Antiques Archeology about purchasing those, and that
was in 2011. No one ever picked up the phone so I posted a little something
on their Facebook account. In no time, Mike responded and asked what I
was interested in. I told him and never heard back from him. I finally
learned that Mike kept those for his personal collection of things. By the
way, this was all before I had any idea of how high prices would go.

To me, they're just kool pieces of automotive art, just like a poster or
photographic print. I (now) understand the historical attachment guys have to
them and wouldn't run any club's plaque on my ride if I wasn't a member.

Local car club in the 1950's. I've only met one former member - and that was 40 years ago. Source O'Brien Truckers.

Here are a couple more I saw on eBay. Wonder which plaque will be the first to sell for $1,000.00.

I used to have a pretty good collection of club plaques. Most of them were bought off ebay, and since I’m cheap, most of them were in the $35 range. Most were repops, but some were originals. I bought them because I thought they were cool. If they were too expensive, or I didn’t have any money at the time, I didn’t buy them. I have sold some of the plaques in the collection. Twice, I have been contacted by HAMBers that saw original plaques that I posted pictures of. On both occasions, they had personal connections to the club, and had been hunting for those specific plaques for years. Both individuals were quite persuasive, and offered me several hundred dollars for the plaque that they wanted. Deals were made, and two people were able to end their searches.

Would I pay that much for a plaque that I had no connection to, just to add another plaque to a collection? No. But for one that meant something to me personally...maybe. There are 3 plaques on my wall that cannot be bought for any amount. One belonged to my late Uncle, and I got it after he p***ed. One is a recast (by way of O’Brien Truckers) of my Dad’s club plaque from back in the day. His original was lost long ago, and after searching for a replacement for years, I was completely shocked to find that Dennis had the original pattern to recast a brand new copy of his old plaque. The last one is an original plaque from the club that a former owner of my Merc used to belong to. I have an old photo of the car, with the same plaque hanging from the back bumper. I heard that this plaque was going to be available at an auction not far from me. When the plaque came up for bids, I didn’t mess around. I stood in the front row with my bidder number in the air, and didn’t move until the hammer fell. Luckily, it only cost me $28 that day... because I don’t know how high I would have gone.

    So yeah, I get it.

I'm not sure why these Cluster Busters plaques are worth so much.

I think they're cool, if you or your car was ***ociated with that club. Sure. Nostalgia is a ***** and that's what sellers are pulling on.

Honestly I've never been able to commit $ to automotive collectibles, always put it towards parts, tools, supplies. It's interesting to read other perspectives.
