Can anyone recommend a good (possibly modern) replacement tire jack for my 1955 Ford Country Sedan? I currently do not have one in the car. I remember the old kind that attached under the bumpers. There has to be something safer I could carry with me. Thanks...
I'm sure you know you definetly don't want an old fashioned bumper jack. I keep a small Harbor Freight floor jack in mine. Of course the best way to change a tire is the plastic AAA card.........you may have to tell the service guy how to do it, lol. I picked up a roofing nail in one of my back tires that resulted in a slow leak, so I aired it up and drove it to a fix-a-flat tire place because the local Discount Tire place was a 2 hour wait. I went out to keep an eye on the car and the young service guy had the jack under the differential. I explained to him the car had to be jacked up by the frame to let the diff. drop down far enough to get the tire out, and showed him exactly where to put the jack. You may need a piece of 4 x 4 to get enough height.
The last time I used a bumper jack the car was parked in my girlfriends front yard and it had been raining for several days, I found a flat concrete paving block and put it under the jack, I was able to remove the tire but before I could put the spare on the jack leaned toward me and i was able to get out of the way before the car fell over, I let it sit until the next day and managed to get a floor jack under the car, I threw the bumper jack away, they are dangerous even in dry weather. Try a pick-a-part bone yard and get a modern worm and roller jack and handle. Small and much safer than a bumper jack - and take up very little room. Get one from a Ford f-series truck and you know it will jack the weight. They sell them for $10.00
This would also work and has a case with it for storage. https://www.amazon.com/Pro-LifT-F-2...ocphy=9030329&hvtargid=pla-479215984284&psc=1
I would not be without a bumper jack for my 56. I carry a scissor jack to get the tire off the ground and the bumper jack to get the body up far enough to remove the tire/wheel. Rear only of course. I also carry tire blocks.
I carry one of these in the trunk of my 55 along with a couple wood blocks, was able to get the tire off in my driveway but haven't had to use it on the side of the road yet which is a good thing!
I have the same jack as nosford. With 2" lowering blocks I can get the tire off no problem. Plus its compact enough to fit in my wagons spare tire well.
