COE A 42 GMC Bike Hauler thread

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by JOYFLEA, Sep 1, 2013.

  1. Hey Blue, can I borrow your wife next Christmas? All I got for Christmas was a pound of pistachios!:)
Love the rolling, but that design looks pretty tedious to do.

Looks cool Blue, does it have much of a crown in it, or does it lay pretty flat? Maybe an optical illusion with all those swirling lines.

Should be flatter in Aluminum. In 18ga I should have pre stretched it but pulled down flat . The sanding gives it a high contrast . Probably 3/16 proud .

  4. I think the Photo shop model tells it all. Those other fender/sides was a nice radical design & would had made a cool custom look. But I think going back to traditional correct GM fenders, gives the truck a more cl***ier look rather than a radical custom look. I'm to Oldschool, I like it a-lot & you are a true art-est...
For a side note, thank you for your help a few months ago. Getting me to make a move on my exhaust stacks. I got-er done. I was worrying about no room for mufflers, they got 40" baffles inside & it's got the look I was wanting...
    Thanks again

  6. I've got a "baffling problem" and would like a peak at what yours look like. Do you have pictures of the actual baffles?

  7. No photos of the baffles, but I got them off eBay. I believe the longest ones I could find listed was 36", but I contacted the seller & he made me a pair the longest he could, 40" long. I believe they are 2-1/2" round with louvers all around, with top & bottom end-caps are at 3-1/2". One end is kinda bell or cone shaped to fit tight at the bottom of the stack pipe, kinda wedges it self. Then you drill a small hole & add a screw through the pipe to hold it in place so it won't bounce & rattle around. I don't see the items in my eBay purchases list. I probably had to buy them off site because they were made special for me. But I think this is his listing? These look like mine? As I remember, I contacted the seller & he got back to me with his PH# in a sneaky way as not to raise a red flag with eBay, & I got-er done...

That’s a metal forming station using an arbor press . Uses dies , a little thicker than hubcaps . The dies range from 2” to 6” . Works well . Think of it as a hammer and sandbag but much more accurate without the sore elbow . I didn’t make any of the tooling just the shelving and mounting .

  12. Hey Blue, thanks for the hospitality! We had a great trip, 4000 miles in 6 days of driving. After our visit, I thought of a couple questions. First, when driving your model A, how do you keep the oxidation from the alloy interior from getting on your clothes? (or do you always wear gray clothes?) Second, you never mentioned where you got the tooling for you arbor press.

    Great meTing you two .
1 I put a little polish on the Al. about every 3 months . It’s so dry here I don’t get much oxidation.
    2. All the tooling came from Imperial Wheeling Machines

image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Been a while since I’ve been on the HAMB . Got the rear fenders cut down for the COE . Bed is about 95% done . Been improving my metal forming skills . Went to some cl***es and was invited to give a short presentation on beadrolling at a masters gathering .
Finally got rid of my China wheel and got a good English wheel . What a difference it made . Don’t have the photos on this IPad but will try to down load some later . It’s great doing compound curves without getting beat to death with the power hammer and quite too .

Once again, Blue, truly impressive!!! I know just enough to know how complicated making that panel actually is... I need 2 months in Texas...

Decided when I got back from a car show I’m not working on other people’s projects . Now I’m back on myCOE . The front p***enger fender was ripped into 5 pieces and rod welded back together . I may have to build some panels and replace parts of the fender . Will get the slapped out and see .

Ok , a lot of hammer , slapped , dolly, and English wheel but one fender is done . No body putty , just epoxy in two colors , high build primer ( several times ) , and spot filler . Lots of sanding with rubber blocks . The two different color epoxy let’s me know when to stop sanding and add high build to low spots . 4 coats painted outside on the porch . Built it up so I can cut and buff in 60 days .

Hey Blu, I had to go back through your thread to look at your 59 dash. I am getting up the courage to chop mine up and fit it. Hope it comes out as nice as yours. I have a couple questions though. How big is your bead roller? Some of the stuff you do looks like you need a very long arm. Question 2, what ever happened to the wifes 59 wagon?
As always, thanks for the inspiration. Your posts get me motivated to get back in the shop. :)
