Hi, Having trouble securing a good throw out bearing. Being told Asian bearing are not lasting. Has anyone tried to re grease an OEM one. Is it possible? My thought was to thoroughly de grease one then drill a hole in the side case and inject new grease then close up hole. If possible what grease was used? Thanks.
Yes I agree magnetic bit and vacuum cleaner. Any idea what grease should be used? ***ume something that is not too fluid.
The extensive and very helpful Rumbleseat's flathead Ford tips included a similar operation. He said all the new bearings you can buy don't have enough grease in them. He explained drilling a hole like the OP and filling it with a short screw afterwards. He recommended covering the drill bit with grease so any swarf will stick to the upper side of the bit instead of falling inward. I never tried it (yet).
Being told new aftermarket ones ****. Some lasted 2 weeks! I will check out that site. I have a good OEM one but wanted to be sure it is packed properly. I have 2 old ones to experiment on in case it does not go well! Thanks for the tip. Will let you know how I make out. I am ***uming something on the order of wheel bearing grease would work with out running out on the clutch.
They make a needle with a grease fitting on one end that you can use to grease sealed bearings. It may work on your TO bearing.
Hi, Van Pelts are back ordered. I called this morning and he found one buried in his stock. Got lucky. We talked about rejuvenating an old one if in good shape. I have 3 old ones. 2 are fair so I will be trying to drill a small hole in one of the poor ones without getting chips inside and re greasing it. Looking on the internet looks like Honda high temp polyurea grease is the choice to use. I will probably cut this one open after to see how it was built and learn what I can from it and report back. Thanks.
Got my new clutch parts from Van Pelt's today. Nice Federal Mogul throw out bearing!! Tied up until next week but will cut open my worst old bearing to see how it is built then try and re grease the next best bearing. Thanks.
I'd want to search the Federal Mogul part number on the net and just on Ebay. I've found a lot of old stock pieces by searching the part number and a rather vague description. Usually from someone who had apparently bought out a warehouse of old stock parts.
Those are handy little ******s, especially when used with one of the smaller, one-handed grease guns. Local NAPA store should be able to fix you up. Before you get too deep into drilling and regreasing the old bearing, load the bearing by hand and fully rotate it several times. If the bearing still runs silky smooth then carry on with your plan. If you feel any roughness at all when rotating the bearing it may not be worth fooling with.
Hi, I have a needle bearing grease tip used on my Jeep. And yes I have the wheel bearing packer too. But I will first try to hand pack the bearing as suggested to see if that works. And as you said if all goes south cut her apart. Thinking of soaking bearing to possibly get all the old grease out before trying to repack it.
When I said "load the bearing by hand" a couple posts ago, I didn't mean to hand pack it with grease. I meant to put whatever pressure you can by hand on the bearing while rotating it a few times to make sure it turns smoothly.
I try to look for NOS ford bearings, but the grease is usually 60 years old and needs cleaned out and filled with new grease. I lost one on the way to Bonneville this year and had to change it out on the salt. The Green Bearing is the best new one available in my opinion. been usiing their axle bearings for many years with out a failure. Third Gen Automotive only sells them and has them in stock. Macs and all those type places have the junk one that burn out. I now have a new Green Bearing in mine and keep an extra in stock just incase. for 18 bucks you cant beat it. https://thirdgenauto.com/product/1928-48-ford-32-64-pickup-new-clutch-throwout-release-bearing/
O.K. on the hand greasing. Looking at the bearing I could not see how you could get the grease in. Thanks!! And the tip on the green bearings. Will look into them for another project.
No clue if this would be the actual part you would get, but I did a Google search for early Ford throwout bearing and an add for Autozone pop-up. The one they had on the screen had a zerk fitting in the side so it can be greased down road. I also ordered one from Third Gen this AM.
Hi, got thru with other obligations and cut the worst throw out bearing cover off. Outside of some scoring on the ball bearing race and dry grease the unit looks good. All the old grease just spun to the outside of the cage ***embly and congealed there. Looks like there was never any provision for a lip seal anywhere on the unit. So I am going to take the next best bearing ***embly and stick it in the ultrasonic bath with solvent to break up the old dried grease. After that I think I can drill a hole into the outside cover halfway up the side and ultra sonic it again to remove any chips that may have gotten in and use Honda poly urea grease they sell to relube the unit. Might work might not but will see. I will post photos of cut apart bearing shortly.
Wow, for such a high stress part, there aren't a lot of ball bearings in there! I would have figured they were much bigger and packed tight all the way around.
So much for My recommendation on using a Green Bearing company throwout. The one I replaced last fall **** the bed with less than 4000 miles on it. Not happy. Found some tinken ones on eBay I’m gonna try.
