I keep seeing posts about F100 brake drums and backing plates, what is so special about this setup? I have a couple of complete front suspensions from 53-55 F100s...do these make a good juice upgrade for mechanicals?

That is exacctly why people want them.
They are better than the ford juice brakes.

    regards,

The 53 to 56 F-100 Brakes are self energizing ... and the 65 - 66 self adjusters can be adapted very easily. Also all the parts except the backing plates are available at NAPA, Car Quest and the like ... :)

Chuck, I could use that stuff if it's going to end up in the cl***ifieds ...

Not sure that I still got your number. You still live off Cyumaca?

Also, I got a buddy that picked up a couple Northstars for a sand rail ... I think he's short a few peices. He might need some advice (or Jesus??, i think he's nuts).

Do they bolt up? If not how hard to adapt?

  7. Yeah Jim they bolt right on a '48 car axles spindles.....backing plates and all.
All that is required is a different INNER bearing and seal.....I did have to sand the surface on the spindle a tad so the bearing would install easily...I think as DeuceRoadster-Randy says ,a Timken bearing fits "outa the box"...I used a BCA bearing ,from O'reillys auto parts -may be an import?
the TECK archive has the article with the part numbers -very helpful- do a search on F100 BRAKES.

They fit " as is " on mine but almost every article I have ever read said to radius the ID of the bearing where it goes to the spindle ... or you will have trouble. Mine has 50 thousand plus miles with no issues But maybe I was lucky ... for once . I am planning on a redo of the 32 Roadster ... if I ever finished this darn 3W ... :( and I will radius the new bearings ... at that time

I had to do very minimal grinding for proper fit

I have considered that maybe production tolerances stacked up in my favor ... I used Timken bearings ... and maybe the spindles were at the edge of tolerances when machined so many years ago. I have done this conversion many times ... and never had a problem and I never radiused a bearing ... but I always used Timkem ... from a old, old parts house. When I found he had them ... I bought ALL he had ... at 1955 prices ...

I got 8 or 10 sets ( inner and outer ) for about what a 2 sets would cost NOW at the bearing distributor ... and the old guy was GLAD to sell them ...

    :)

I used a set of 56 F-100 brakes on my roadster--used Buick drums as a "cover" for the real drums--Buick drums where out of spec so it was a perfect deal

I dig the way that looks, and I'm gonna be running these brakes on my coupe. Do they offer any heat disapation/cooling effect to the drums?
How much machining did it take to fit the buick drums over the F-100's?

Anyone have a set of worn out buick drums they want to let go of??:D

Can you post up the Timken part numbers? This would be handy to have.
