Hot Rods What are you guys using for steering wheels in your Model A's

while not a model A, my 33 Pickup is a pretty tight space, have had this 15" GM "comfort grip" wheel for over 30 years. Did just but a smaller diameter 59 Impala to go in it.

 

I had the Grant banjo in my A on a GM tilt column

 

Moon, red metal flake. 15 inch, dished.

 

15" Bell wheel.

 

'40 Standard wheel (same as '40-'47 pickup) on a '40 column and box in my avatar, '29 Tudor. It came with a big early Cadillac wheel that was too big, plus the center horn button stuck out too far.

Original wheel. I don't have money to spend on something to replace it.

 

These old style wheels look awesome, but isn't the large diameter wheel putting you knuckles into the dash and door and your left elbow into the door glass when turning?

 

Very short!

 

Complete 56 Ford pu steering box, column, self cancelling turn sigs and original Bell 4 spoke wheel from the unlimited hydro, "Notre Dame". The wheel even has the holes in a spoke where the nitrous button was.

 

50 Ford, just barely fits !!

Some pretty decent choices there. I have lost track of how many otherwise HAMB friendly cars that I have posted photo on here that I didn't show one of the interiors and often didn't take one because they had some ugly gaudy aftermarket steering wheel in it quite often looking like that was all that O'Reilly's had on the shelf the day they went steering wheel shopping. That includes my best friend's old car.

Banjo style wheels always look good in early cars, The three spoke wood wheels usually look pretty decent and I rather like the smaller diameter aftermarket version of a 40 Ford wheel. Still along with looking good a steering wheel has to feel good in your hands when you drive and if you do a lot of long road trips in your rod that is beyond important. Those old three spoke aftermarket wood wheels with the rivets will eat the crap out of your hands when you are driving several hundred miles a day. The 59 Corvette wheel I had in my 48 for years looked fantastic but that skinny wheel made you understand why you saw pictures of early sports car drivers wearing driving gloves all the time on the road. The skinny wheel made your hands hurt after a couple hundred miles.

 

‘38 Studebaker banjo, I rolled a smaller rim and got a new grip made. 34 Studebaker President horn button adapted to the center. The spokes are unique to the 38.

Banjo wheel of unknown origin. ‘37 Ford horn button.

 

I cut down a 39 banjo wheel to 15" and made a ring out of stainless tubing. This is in my 31 Model A roadster with a 36 Ford roadster dash.

 

By looking in the magasines at the time it seems the 56 Ford is the steeringwheel to use in that era.
It seems that parts start to be common in hotrods about 3 years after they where made.

 

That’s a thing of beauty right there. Is it the stock diameter?

 

Why spend big bucks just make your own, take two SBC connecting rods, remove the caps. Bolt together bend a 1" tube to fit, weld together and you have a custom steering wheel!

 

I have a '59 Impala wheel in my T. Large diameter, but the leverage sure helps parking.
