What started out as a great day ended bad.A few friends & I were at the old car races & car show at Edgewater Race Park in Cincy Ohio. There was a green chopped model A that was sitting in the staging lanes.Me and a friend was walking around this thing, it was very cool.I walked away from the car and talked to a few people and started towards the swap meet. The guy made it to the line and and took off.At the big end of the track,he went through the lights and then hit the wall, flipped the car over a few times before it came to a stop.the Model A was doing close to 100 mph.I'm not sure if he made it or not, alot of people were saying he didn't have a helmet on and that he had p***ed away. From what I seen I don't think he made it.They medivaced him out and the car was pulled off the track. It wasn't long before they started racing agian. They stopped the news crews from coming in.They were sitting outside the fence when I left with the cameras on.Guess they didn't want the bad publicity.I helped a friend get his 55 back on the trailer and then I left.Out of respect, I couldn't see racing anymore after that.Seems like to me they should have stopped the racing for the day.Maybe I'm just too soft,I don't know.It has to be tough on his family and friends. All that will, please pray for the guy,and his family.Death is not new to me but this bothered me alot today, guess 'cause the day was going so good.I don't know..

Sorry to hear this news, Brother Steve.
I know the car and have seen its driver.

    I hope he is well.

found this on a local news website.....

A crash at the Edgewater Sports Park race track near Miamitown has left one person dead.

The accident happened before 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon during the 31st annual "Hot Rod Old Car Drags" activities.

Gene Kinman, 65, of Carrollton was drag racing his 1929 Ford Model A and had crossed the finish line when he lost control of his vehicle and hit a wall.

Kinman was then partially ejected from the vehicle, leaving the car to roll on top of him.

Edgewater Sports Park is located at 4819 East Miami River Road in Cleves.

I was there. the 29 sedan was lined up against a yellow 32 ford 5 window American Graffiti style coupe. I was seated at the west end of the track. the sight made me very sad. I left, no more racing today. prayers to the family

The "un-official rule" at race tracks is that nobody dies at the track. They all die en-route to the hospital, or at the hospital.
Racers dying at a race track would create liability nightmares that would close the track.
That's why racing continued. The guy didn't "die at the track"--it was just a bad wreck, and racing continues after a bad wreck.
Earnhardt didn't die at Daytona. Neither did any other NASCAR drivers.
I'm guessing it's the same deal at a drag strip.

My prayers are out to the driver and the family. Did anyone find out the details? There are a lot of A builders on this site and we need to see if there is something we need to consider in order to keep this from happening again. Does anyone know if he was a Hamber? The above post mentioned he was partially ejected....man I don't want to hear that he didn't have a seat belt and shoulder harness set up. Driving a rod on the streets these days is tuff enough so I can't imagine drag racing an A without the proper safety stuff. Of course when something like this happens, I tend to look at it as a good thing when you think about it. I can't think of a better way to go than running through the traps in a Model A at 100mph. May God bless.

man, you just gotta be prepared for that stuff I guess, you never know when it'll be your last p*** down the 'strip or the last 2 block drive to the grocery store...I'm surprised they kept racing...I doubt any of the racers knew anything other than rumor while the day continued...

From the g****vine I was told that he hit his brakes after going through the lights. Then the model A went straight for the wall.Hit it then flipped. So maybe one of the front brakes locked up or something.I was also told that he didn't have a helmet on.If he was at a 100 mph, looks like that would have been good enough for a 13.99 or better p***, so he should have had one on.I looked at the car 5 minutes before the crash. it was chopped, hood & fenderless.I can't remember if it had the roof insert welded up or not.seems like it was open so he might have gone out the roof with just a lap belt hold him enough for the car to roll over on him.no one will know for sure what happen at that time ,I don't think.was it the car or him that caused it?Like I said I got it through the g**** vine ,so don't hold me to anything. It was a very sad ending to a perfect day.It make you wonder why we worry about all the little thing that make us upset through out the day.enjoy life, sometimes it is over faster than you would want it to be.My wife gave in a request for prayer for the family at church Sunday night. The whole church prayed for the family.I hope they will be as strong as they can be for each other in this time of sorrow....Hambers hug your ol' lady and don't forget to tell your kids you love em.You never know when it's your time to go

We were friends with Gene and normally would have been at the track with him. From the very first time that we met him a few months back, racing his car at a track to see what it would do is something he talked about often.
He always went out of his way to say hello to everyone at a cruise or show. Tonight at his visitation there were many many people and cars. He had started a club a few years back and the club set up just like it would for a cruise in. I know he would have loved it. As far as what happened I dont know if we will ever know for sure. I am just glad that if it was his time to go that he went out doing something he had been wanting to do and that it was in a car that he loved. Please keep the family in your prayers.
The ky kruisers have a saying"come cruise with us"well we will cruise with you again someday Gene!
