Who builds HIGH horsepower Ecotecs?

After all of the excitement of Speedweek, I want to participate. I think I've got my eye on a car, and a (so far) soft record.

I'll need a well-built Ecotec. Much better than I can build myself. Is there someone, ideally near Pittsburgh, who can build high-power Ecotecs? I've got the build manual, and there's a lot of work on the higher horsepower engines that require closer tolerances than I can meet.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    Matt

We talked about these awhile ago. Using the Search might help you.

You could do it, but by the time you buy all the exotic parts you'd need, you'll be into it for close to the cost of a Pro Stock engine.

Kroyers here at the Las Vegas Speedway built Duane and Gary Coles big hp Ecotec. It put Duane in the 200 mph club last week.
They are a long way from you and I bet expensive.

Here is a few pics inside Kroyer's shop.
The SBC is a B-ville engine.

The GM guys were giving away manuals in the pits at the salt this year. I was able to look at one for about a minute. GM wants to help, get the manual and call them. Good Luck!

I'd seriously look at that mopar 4 cylinder that was in the Blowfish. I'm not sure how they compare ci wise to an ecotec but that engine (and car) impressed the crap outa me. If you wanted to run the ecotec, GM seems to want to help folks with the technical knowledge.... Both those little engines are just a glimpse of the future I suspect.

You can download the Complete manual for free off GM's website:

If the Mopar stuff is anything (for the 2.0) like the 2.2/2.5 stuff, it's going to be pretty good info. I really like both the GM and Mopar programs -- I don't know what stuff Fords done lately, but they used to have a lot of stuff also (years ago). Some of this stuff might fall on deaf ears here . . . it might be more appropriate to another board. :)

I checked on this when the GM manual first came out. Supposedly the motor puts out close to 1,000 hp. But it's some rediculous boost on the turbos and you can bet it's going to be a high maintenance affair. Cost to build the motor according to the manual is over $40k. At least that was the price I was quouted by the shop listed in the manual.

I asked Poteet what they were running for boost on their midget based four cylinder. His answer was "28 to 30 pounds". WHAO!

I've got a pal or two in the Detroit area who know how. They're GM connected. If you need more guidance, let me know and I'll make a couple calls.

It's not quite that high. The other thing with these motors is they have a very narrow powerband, almost like a 2 stroke.

Thanks, guys. Thanks especially for PMs.

(I like it how I said "I've got the build manual" and then got several suggestions to get the manual, along with two links to the manual.)

  19. 1980s Japanese motorcycle engine technology? And people get shit for using small block chevies which are American and have been around for 50 years.

  20. Actually, quite a few of your newer crate motors are Mexican. Doesn't matter to me, either way. I say use what you got.:)

  23. look its not hard to get hp from a ecotek...all you have to do is ome mild motor work drop compression to about 8.5 to 1 and you can hit it with a easy 25 lbs of boost...you just have t make sure you have the correct air feul but its really not that hard most work can be done in your own garage and a motor shop to do all the others....a friend in md has a cav. running a ecotec and on a stock block with redone alum. heads and bigger injectors he hit it with 20 lbs of boost with no prob...and he only has ruffly 10k in the motor...so i hope that helps if ya need anything else just hit me up and ill make some calls...

wouldnt it just be easier to use a japanese engine that is all ready built for boost? like a nissan sr20det, or a mazda BPT, etc etc etc. that already has 180hp and up to 250-300 with simple bolt ons? A engine already built for boost is beefed up, with bigger rods, piston squirters, etc etc.. and have just about 100% reliability.
instead on spending thousands on a ecotec doing all kinds of engine work? ushally you can get a japanese turbo motor for bewteen $500-$1800 with very low mileage.

seems to me that GM is just trying to push the crap out of these as the "small block chevy" of 4 cylinders,.. I dont see what is so special about them really.

  26. well if there built right they r a serious contender ...ive seen a 4cy ecotec pushing 1000 hp and thats impresive...but like you said its easier to run a import motor that built for boost but i guess that would take the fn out of it lol ....

Jeez -- if your going to run a motor built for boost . . . why not run anything from Mopar from 1987 - 1992 ?? (T2 blocks 1987 . . . but 1989 was common block era). GM is just drumming up business for domestic cars. There was an 8 second FWD Mopar running 16 valve DOHC 2.2L engine with "old school" tech at Topeka that I got to check out in July. I'm not a GM fan, but I like what they've done with trying to get people interested in domestic cars for tuner cars. Same with DiamlerChrysler.
