Ran across this in the comments in the above article looks like this company has a lot of options for Fords looking to go with EFI. https://howellefi.com/product-category/ford/ In both cases though the bottom line is the price tag for these conversions.

The 223 was THE engine in local figure-8 racing. My engine builder specialized in them while they were hot. The cars often had '63-'64 Ford ch***is under them, supposedly indestructible. I'll have to find some pictures for y'all.

The '55 and '56 Fords were very popular. This was a true junkyard cl*** where the owners made EVERYTHING, including wheel centers from steel diamond plate. This cl*** had it's own sanctioning body SAFER, (Suffolk ***ociation of Figure Eight Racing) and got paid more than some other cl***es.

This is sort of related to this thread, there was a guy here in Oregon that started a dental equipment manufacturing company in the 50's called A-dec . His name is Ken Austin and before the dental equipment business he started manufacturing Ford hot rod engine parts, mostly flatheads. If you see flathead finned heads labeled "Austin" then you have seen some of his heads. He also developed an experimental mechanical port fuel injection system for the 223 Ford six in 1953 and had a few patents and at least one running prototype. This being a new technology (for Ford anyway) to use an overhead valve m*** production engine Ken saw a lot to experiment with for his hot rod parts company. I will attach a link to some pictures of his car collection, he died a few years ago but I was fortunate enough to talk to Ken while touring his collection and was intrigued by his 223 six on display with his fuel injection. I don't have pictures but there was a magazine article in one of the (?) magazines in 1953, could have been popular mechanics or a car magazine. Here is the link to his collection, great car guy, I think he also did some V 12 speed equipment as well. Mark

I found a thread here on the HAMB with Ken's obituary and some history on him. Also stole this picture from that thread of his 223 six. Search Ken Austin on the HAMB and a bunch of stuff jpb-b_ville-1952-k_austin.jpg comes up.

I wonder what's going on with the valve cover? Looks like it got hot around the mounting studs.

No clue, when I saw the engine on display the valve cover was painted red and everything was perfect. Never saw the engine in this car as I would have been in diapers at the time.... pretty advanced stuff at the time!

I'd love to have that set up for my 223.

I found this part pretty interesting.

Early on, Ford fitted its lightweight sixes with a Holley single-barrel carburetor with a gl*** fuel bowl. By 1962, the nimble Ford six was factory fitted with the new Autolite 1100 single-barrel carburetor, and this was the design that often led to problems.

This is the first time I have heard the Autolite 1100 was considered inferior to the Holley 1904.
