Where's all the leg room in a Model A?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Wildfire, May 15, 2006.

  1. C9, How does that thing cool out in the desert? I got lucky when I set the 454 in my frame, the water pump came out dead in the center of the radiator. Big Walker Deuce three row.

  2. The 31 on 32 rails car is still in the project stages.
Trying to get to the "lift off the body, plumb and wire" part."

The radiator in the pic is a US Radiator for a Deuce, but 1" shorter and needs to be 2" shorter so the hood line will flow (design-wise) better.

I do have a new aluminum two (big tubes) radiator for the 31 that the local guys tell me will do the job.
The radiator was built locally - at the airport - and the folks there are very nice and helpful.

Anyway, keep running into other house/garage oriented projects and with the heat wave that's going on now - 104-107* F - by the time I get out to the garage about two hours is the max . . . and that in the late mornings.

Anyway, the 32 - also with BB Buick engine - is running a 4-core Walker radiator that was new in 1985.
Doing ok, if I get caught out on the really hot days, about 198* on the highways and 200-205* in town.

As you can see the Buick fan sits low and left.
I do have a shroud on the 32, but the bottom is open to clear the fan.

It didn't make a whole lot of difference a few years back when I left it off for a few days to see how it would do during a Central California heat wave with temps 100-104*

Going to try the 31 sans shroud and see how it goes.

I do all the stuff that I write about vis a vis timing and manifold sourced vacuum advance.
Few days back I cranked the initial timing up 4* and left the all-in at 32*.
Feels a little stronger, but is running a couple of degrees cooler on the highway and in town.

Maybe not a good test since it was only 98* F....

Raising old issue 191cm and 30 tudor. In link testing new attacments 6 inch seat back and now, well... I manage to shift gears without going under my knee and legs are more/less under the steering wheel (about 5 and 7 a´clock.. not anymore 11 and 1 :)
No one sits on rear as there is tank behind rear seat... Fast solution GF moves seat to frontmost pins, when needed, Not very often..

  4. People were shorter back in the day. I've driven a few '32 Fords owned by others, the brake pedal through the floor, what an odd angle from the factory. I'm 6' and even my '59 Ford the seat can go back another 2". Another project. With my OT 2020 Mustang, nobody can sit behind me in the back seat unless they are a double amputee...

I just read through this thread from years ago...but still a problem. I owned a 29 roadster for a few years and I was contemplating cutting across the tulip panel to gain a couple of inches. I don't see that mentioned. You could cut back of the door where the reveals are straight and then back to the back of the tulip panel and over. a couple of inches should not mess with the body lines much and 2 inches more cab opening would make a huge difference.

My brother is about 6'3' and the seats in his '29 Tudor are almost where the rear seat would be. His is chopped and channeled.

My mid-engine '29 closed-cab pickup will have its firewall moved forward as far as possible, and the floor lowered in the pedal area, to the bottom of the frame rails (it is channeled 4-inches). It is getting top-swing pedals.

This will allow me to chop the roof a bit, and move me into a modern seating position. I am building so it can accommodate a 6'3" driver easily. I am only 5'10". My older brother ate all my food.

    Hello,

Being that you are 6’5” you might want to think about another hot rod or at least an extended Model A coupe cab. It has been done to accommodate larger folks. But, a simple solution of liking a Model A is to get a sedan, two door or 4 door and move the seats back as comfortably as you need, without having an impending doom on the rear passengers. You still have the classic Model A grille and front end styling. No need for a 32 shell for any Model A build.

My brother and I were considered growing teenagers when we towed home a Model A coupe. We got it running and when we both were in the cab, it felt cramped for both of us. It was completely stock and we were too high up and forward. So, we liked our friend’s little sporty car and he had smaller, but more comfortable seats than any USA made bucket seats.

We knew if we pushed back the small thin back seats as far as it would go, then it would have been fine for the two of us. We were not 6’5” though. Your situation of being so tall and possible “big” is another story. My brother decided in his older sibling wisdom to sell the Model A and 51 Oldsmobile sedan to fund a new 348 powered 58 Impala.

So, we were not in the cab of the Model A long enough. Although, we did go for a long ride all over our Long Beach city area. You would not have fit behind the wheel or even in the passenger seat.

Our goal for the Model A Coupe

So, a few years later, we got some small sporty car seats with thin backs, but fully adjustable and moved the original seating position in the modified 1940 Willys Coupe so we could get some foot space. Since we moved the SBC motor back 10% to be street legal for the class, the interior space had less space in the stock seat position.

We moved the brackets and two bucket seats back as far as it would go. With the modified aluminum panel, floor coverings, the space from the seats moved back became comfortable for the two brothers.

The other simple solution would be to keep everything in front of you stock, firewall and pedals, etc. then go sit in a sedan or sedan delivery. The bucket seats you install should be the small sporty car type, as they are small, thinner than the USA models and comfortable. But, they will allow access to the rear seat people behind the seats. Now you have a nice Model A sedan or sedan delivery.

Many years later, my wife and I got a 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery with a 327. It was a project, but it ran and had A/C. It was our first car with A/C, but needed a lot of repairs and safety features before we could drive it.

Granted, it is not a Model A Coupe, but the idea of allowing the small sporty car bucket seats as far back as possible was a good thing, to make the driving position roomy and not cramped. The two door/4 door Model A sedan may be the answer.

Otherwise, the only true way to lengthen the driving position of the Model A Coupe is to extend the cab the required measurements necessary to accommodate your size. It certainly would not be a bad idea to go sit in several coupes and sedans, not only by yourself, but with a friend or your wife/girlfriend. YRMV

  10. You Phord guys stop whining about your Grand Central Station sized interiors. If you wany a glove tight fit, be 6'3" and squeeze into a Model 77 with a recessed firewall to give room for the hemi. I've been doing that for 50 years in this car!!
