I'm new here. I have been working on a 41 Half Ton Pickup. I picked up some rear fenders recently that I believe to be 40/41 Ford big truck. I paid a decent amount for them before realizing that they are not for a half-ton. I'm wondering if someone can tell me what I have here. They are in pretty good shape... There is not a pic of what would be the drivers side, but there was a spare tire mounted on the driver's side of the trailer... Also, no filler hole in the driver's fender was a giveaway. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
The box is a Ford half ton, and the wheel opening is half ton. I think the gas tank was moved inside the cab after 1941, so they are probably 42-47 fenders. Either box length or width changed after 41, too. Don’t remember which, or maybe both.
The bed is 42-47 also, it has the filler piece in front of the fender down low, I could be wrong, but don’t think 40/41 has that. Also, they have what appears to be the little lip/protrusion on the front outer edge at the bottom where the running board bolted to. They can work for your ‘40 with a bit of work on the “protrusion” part. I sold a set of ‘42-7 fenders to a guy who said they were his. ‘40. He pointed out that was the difference.
'42-'47 beds look the same as '38-'41 but there is a 3" difference in width. Internal with of the '38-'41 bed is 46". '42-'47 bed is 49". Ford started making pickup beds wider in '42 because more building materials were being produced in 4' x 8" sheets. A full sheet of plywood will lay flat in a '42 and later bed.
