While I am installing a interior in the sedan I have decided now would be a good time to add a horn, after the past 30 years without one I have come to the conclusion the middle finger doesn't work as well as a horn. I would like to wire the horn up using the horn ****on but I don't have a clue as to what parts I will need to make it work as it should, I realize I can't wire a horn ****on under the edge of the dash but I prefer to use the correct location. Running the wire is not a problem I just don't know what type of contact I need inside the steering wheel. This is the horn ****on and there is a spring to push it out. And this is the HD horn I am using. HRP
What steering column? Do you have a picture of the top of the column? Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
A lot of it will depend on what steering box/column/wheel set-up you have. A lot of the older cars used a hollow steering shaft with a wire inside, pushing the horn ****on would supply a ground. But once turn signals became standard on most cars, this function was incorporated into the turn switch using a brush with a commutator on the steering wheel. In any case, you should use a relay to actually power the horn, with whatever ****on you use to fire the relay.
You really need both, a horn to get their attention and the finger to let 'em know you're not just saying hello. The column on my heap has no provision for a horn ring etc. so I just put a push ****on on the dash. Yeah it's a little farther away but a lot less trouble.
Right now, I'm using the original Lincoln starter ****on on the dash for my horn. Since it was originally 6V neg ground, the switch just supplies the ground for the horn relay. I may try and hook it to the Chevy column later on.
You should make a horn ****on like the Jeepneys in Olongapo had; a coil spring and contact, just pluck it and it will keep letting the other guy know you mean business.
Danny, I'm not sure if you are asking for information on specific parts for the ****on or electrical help. But here's a crude drawing of the circuit. The relay is a switch that handles heavy current to the horn by using a small electromagnet controlled by the ****on. When the ****on is pushed, it establishes a ground, completing the circuit to the coil (electromagnet). When energized, the horn contact is made and it blows. If you've ever seen a crashed car whose horn blows continuously, likely the isolated 12v wire in the column got damaged and grounded out. Hope this helps.
Don’t screw with adding more wiring to a old car. More electrical issues to go wrong. If you are reaching for a ****on - it’s just as easy to reach out the window and use this..... https://www.googleadservices.com/pa...i58NT07prhAhVS1IMKHegjBx8Qzzl6BQgLELQB&adurl= You won’t use it much anyway - unless you are the ****ty driver causing issues. You can get double your pleasure by using your middle finger to push down the ****on too ! There - no muss no fuss .... Cheap / easy and done ....
After reading the "pranks on our friends" thread, make sure if a friend helps that its not connected to your brake light switch.
Part of the deal is to have a LOUD enough horn. I Google's loud motorcycle horn and got one that can be heard! Danny, what column is in your rod? This is probably what you need. https://www.limeworksspeedshop.com/Retro-Horn-Kit-p/rhk1001.htm Phil
Phil, I think you have solved my problem, I believe my column is a Limeworks piece, Thank you, the horn I have is a aftermarket Harley Davidson vintage springer type horn and it is indeed loud. HRP

If you can wire it up so it sends a text image of the middle finger to the rider/driver who is on their cell phone, you probably won't need an audible device. Just sayin'
Where did you get it? HD dealer? Ebay? I'm looking for one. Bought a Sparton 12V that looks similar, but sounds anemic. Possibly Jeep.
Ah, Olongapo and **** River....the good old days. Wasn't stationed there but at Clark AFB 69-70 so that was my "vacation" spot so to speak when not in Angeles City or Balibago. Nothing like hanging on to a speeding jeepney half drunk.....
I got it from the local motorcycle shop and the horn is aftermarket, JP Cycles. It was chrome plated but I have since sand blasted it and painted it black. Phil, we have been working on the interior and haven't installed the parts I got from Limeworks, I will report on the installation when I get it done, I still have to hook up the emergency/park brake cables, I'm trying to get everything wrapped up before Knoxville next month. HRP
The horn is wired up and is indeed very loud, I looked at the bag it came in and it says JP Cycles but the box says Drag Specialties, it puts out a 113 decibels. HRP
The truck I just bought didn't have a horn and thus it couldn't p*** the inspection for registration, etc, in my state. Because I'm planning to change the column someday, I rigged up a temp. ****on for now. There was a place to bolt it on so that sort of dictated where and how. I was going to do it all cheap and crude but my overbuilder brain eventually cost me $40+ for the whole deal.
https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/save-that-sweet-horn.680634/ I used these Jeep parts on a shoebox Ford. I had to make an aluminum sleeve to press fit on the steering shaft because the id of the insulated contact ring was larger than the Ford shaft, other than that it worked well.
