Hot Rods Power brake booster on a 1940 Ford

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Buckshot40, Dec 14, 2021.

  1. I'm running a Mustang master cylinder in my '40 and I would like to add a power brake booster. Will I have to run a vacuum pump and canister?

Depends on your engine. Does it pull a reasonable vacuum?

If your master cylinder is still under the floor, you will be limited to probably a 7" booster because of space limitations. My understanding is that those small boosters don't really help. DISCLAIMER: The last statement was based on things I read on the internet probably on this forum. Your scenario may vary.

Have done quite a few with master under floor and booster--7" dual diaphram-all stop very well but motors pull 17-18" of vacuum.

  8. Maybe you need to stop believing the stuff you read, particularly on the internet with no attributions. I have a 7" booster on my '35 PU....it has worked very well for the past 21 years.......with a Nailhead engine........

I used a firewall mounted kit from ECI and it even clears the 390 FE just fine. Engine is close to stock so vacuum shouldnt be a problem for me.

Hey, good for you, you got it right. I put a disclaimer in. There's been a **** ton of threads about brakes on this forum over the years and some say that they didn't help. Like I said - your scenario may vary.

  11. I guess you covered the whole idea with your "disclaimer" and "scenario may differ"......that's real helpful to the OP. But, if these threads were limited to people who have first hand knowledge and experience, they would be pretty bare.....caveate emptor.......
