Nice! It looks really straight too. That'll be a fun one.

    Blount County, Oneonta area.
It's not my car. Right now, is to clean it up and see what he has.
Both rear wheels are locked. When he put new tires on, he said it was not the brakes. So, it's locked in either the rear axle or transmission/engine. We do not know if this may be a linkage issue or honestly, not being familiar with the Hydramatic.
There is a lot of trash around the linkage where animals have packed sticks and stuff in the nooks and crannies through the decades. All of that is going to be cleared away. Maybe after all that is cleared, and we can shift through the gears, we can see what's going on. The driveshaft may need to come out just to roll the car around.
I really hope we can figure this out. Pulling the engine and that iron hydramatic transmission at one time will be a chore.
Hopefully the Pontiac and Hydramatic can be saved.
He's not able to do the under the car work and I really want to help him out. I plan to go down once a week and help him out with it.
Right now....it's just seeing what we have
It's really amazing. Most of the rubber is still supple, I can't believe it. It's going to need some floor pans. It rusted from the inside out. What got the pans was that rubber mat the wagons had on the floors. Those pans look almost new from underneath but that have rusted through from the top down. If it had carpet it would probably be fine.
    Rockers doors...frame, It's incredible.

Just my opinion. If you have to pull the drivetrain it's far easier to pull off the front clip and then remove the engine/transmission together. Make sure the trans linkage doesn't get moved (from where it is currently adjusted).

"A weird way to mount a fuel filter/sediment bowl, that's what it is."

Used on cars that mostly travel downhill or are running big and littles.

Way cool, the makings of an easy mild custom. Though I'm not into the ''stock'' thing, that battery is toast but could conceal a smaller one.

  7. I’d drive that as found. (Slammed of course)
    Looks great.
Bought that close to me. Darn it.
I’m chasing down a 2 door 56 Chevy wagon supposedly in the neighborhood

Great find!! I love those ’55-‘57 Pontiac wagons. I was excited to find what looked like a decent ‘56 Safari a few years back but in person it was nowhere near as nice as it looked in the photos in the ad and I certainly didn’t need another full on project. Oh well.
Can’t wait to see it cleaned up. Please keep us updated!

There is a shop manual and parts catalog for 1956 Pontiacs at the Pontiac Safari website, along with a bunch of other useful information. http://www.pontiacsafari.com Look in the garage section.

That’s a clean looking vehicle. It almost, I mean almost, has me wanting a wagon.
Heck of a find for sure.

Don’t be so sure it’s not the brakes, if they were set up properly it would not take much rust working-its way between the shoe and the linings to lock things up, been there and done that, had to cut the drums off. Damn nice shape for sitting that long.

    You know, Maybe, so.
I only saw the car for a few minutes. I saw that filter thing just long enough to notice that it's not part of the fuel system or at least, the main part of the fuel system. It has some type of plastic hose and it's a dead end with no outlet. Part of an Auxiliary heater??? That makes a lot of sense.
I do know the car was used for camping and fishing trips all over AL, MS and FL. The damage to the deck lid was caused by the tongue of a boat trailer.
A neat history on the car is when it was new in '56 it was driven to California on a trip to Disneyland. That was a big deal in those days, a really big deal.

Trans could be in reverse. They didn't have park, so reverse was used.

wow, what a wagon. I am working on a 9 p***enger '56 Pontiac wagon as well. Can I ask a favor? I don't have the 3rd row seat cushions with mine. I am going to have to fabricate something myself. Can you supply me with pictures and measurements of the ones in your car? It would help get me started. Thanks
