So my new job has me spending a lot of time in S Georgia. My boss calls me the other day and reads me an article about a local wrecking yard that is ready to start selling parts again. The place has been there since the 40s and the DOT has forced the sale of some of his property to widen the highway, so the story in the paper reads that he is going to sell some stuff. I got all excited and expedited my next trip for Work. We go over on Sat. and look around only to find nobody home. I call the phone number on the side of one of the buildings and we can hear the phone ringing. The old man pics up and our discussion ends in him not wanting to sell anything and we are not welcome to look around because of Insurance. At least we didnt get run off by shotgun. The story I hear from the locals is that he has been like this for years, since it is not a working yard anymore he does not have a salvage license etc. etc.etc .. I talked to the Helper guy for quite awhile and think I can soften him up if I continue to stop by when I am in town. I will have my hot rod with me next week, maybe that will help. He told me there is some 30s stuff but it is pretty rough, mostly 50s and 60s Anyway, here are some pictures taken from the road, this is after approx 600 cars have already been moved out of the way.
Now across the street is more cool stuff. I almost missed the sign behind the weeds. It was run by the same guy that owns the yard. I looked inside and it is mostly junk, shopping carts, newer hubcaps, etc .
Great pics, I wonder why the guy won't sell anything? How does he live with no income? Did he seem like a jerk? I can't imagine he plans to do anything with all those cars. I spy a '59 Plymouth wagon in there, a**** others. I bet that speed shop had some cool **** in it at one time.
I am in Ga, Where is that yard at? If you go again let me know I want to go. I will stand behind you . Just incase he starts shooting
Is that yard in Valdosta? Looks familiar. Tyler, you don't need any more projects. Find Eric another roadster body.
Thanks for the cool pics! Where did the 600 cars go, I wonder? Hopefully not the crusher. From what I could tell, the cars that are left look in decent shape. Hope this story has a happy ending someday.
I won't reveal the location until I get to look around myself Funny you should mention Eric, I recently got a 26T roadster body like the one he sold awhile ago. Did you end up with the A? My truck was purchased at the same time.
"**** Hunting for Christ" - that is awesome southern propogandy usually it is just **** hunting for dinner. There are some ornary guys with junk yards around here NE of Atlanta too. There is also a good one.
you need to visit the place on US1, south of Waycross on east side of highway make sure to get tour inside the museum building too!
I went down to visit my brother-in-law in Athens, GA a few months ago and p***ed a few old yards like this...I was kicking myself for not driving my truck! Can't put much in the trunk of the wife's Volvo...especially with her luggage in there! Next time we go down there we're takin' the pickup.
I hope when I get old and cantankerous I have the wits about me to realize when its time to sell my junk so my family doesn't have to deal with it or its taken by the state. Some of these old codgers live in squaller on their ss checks when they are surrounded by a few thousand dollars of rust they could sell and live off of. I think its the same mentality as the people that hoard dogs and cats. I guess I sound like sour g****s though.
This guy is living in a large Nice house on a hill that looks over his kingdom. He has several street rods in the garage. He was clean and didn't smell bad. We're not talking about a holed up hermit with 20 dogs and cats, this guy seemed reasonable. He was born and raised in the house that still stands on the property. He does not appear to have any plans to crush anything, he's just not ready to sell stuff yet. He was also talking about selling the whole lot to the right buyer.
I live in Gainesville,GA. Where would those junkyards be at in the NE of Atlanta area? I will be happy to check them out for good stuff.
Keep us posted, I would like to stroll through when he is ready to start selling. TIIIIMMMMMYYYYYYY!!!!!!!
Yeah, all his little easy "winter fixer-upper" projects huh Cool pics tho,are there still a lot of places like this ****tered about the US? i mean over this side of the pond you occaisionally hear of a nice score, but tend to take such talk with a pinch of salt as it were.........gotta say love the old speed shop there tho
Thats nothing. Check out this yard in Georgia http://www.cl***iccarsrotting.com/ link to pics: http://www.cl***iccarsrotting.com/ccrtour3/index.html
I think that might be the place between Franklin and LaGrange? If so I have been there before and had no luck with the old man either.
I'll take you with me next week, will you be around? You're from up north, do you have a bullet proof vest I can borrow???
I'd give your left nut for that speed shop sign! Man, wouldn't love to poke around in that place....maybe some offy heads, old intakes, cams......you never know what you'll find in them Georgia pines! Do ya reckon there's a still over yonder he's trying to keep secret?
That speed shop would make a great spot for some hot rod photos. "I found this old hot rod sitting in an old speed shop that had been closed for 40 years...".
