Here's why I recommend Mustang seats: I have 2.5"+ and I'm a little over 6'2" with a long torso and my car is chopped 4". There are plenty of pros with them: - New seat covers are plentiful with a range of color options. Parts are available to restore them. If you don't like the Mustang seat covers, the early Bronco covers offer even more choices. - you can drop them an additional 1"+ by not using sliders. -They're comfortable. Especially for a low, thinner seat. -They're not that expensive. Yes, a minivan seat will probably cost less, initially, but after custom upholstery you may be about even. You can recover mustang seats at home with a couple specific tools. They look good. Drawbacks: They are just wide enough to touch in an A. If you want custom covers, toss out what I mentioned about savings... but that goes for all buckets mentioned..
All true. But, I'd advise driving a Mustang with the seats you want before you decide on them. I've got an original '65. The seats are okay, not uncomfortable, but with 56 year old ideas of ergonomics. Not a lot of lateral support on either the seat bottom or the back. Plus there is zero support for your neck and head if you get into a whiplash kind of jamb. Great seats in a '65, though.
This is true for all the seats mentioned in this thread. We're talking traditional hot rod seats, I can't think of another option that does more - or anything you want. Also, if you want bolsters or more padding, companies make kits for Mustang seats. I've sat in Mustang seats (in 65s and 66s) and I've sat in minivan seats (in a minivan) and both in hotrods, I'll personally take the Mustangs.
My seats are from a 67 chev carprie and were installed by the guy I bought the car from. I am pulling them out and may cut frame or installed new seats.
I think if my chop was any greater than 2.5 I wouldn’t be able to get in the seat. As soon as I get my car back I will be taking pics and show you guys what I’m talking about. I do appreciate all the comments and some great ideas to consider about a Sears for our A’s
This is what I used on my coupe. I did modify it to mount further forward or back if needed. I plan on whittling back the package tray, so that I can move the seat back, but have not done it yet. I like the "bench seat" as it can be bunned however you like.
Thought I'd throw in a quick pic of my Model A seat. The plaid is from a seat cover for a '51 Ford PU and was made in '55. The Gator hyde is the original material from my buddy's '51 Henry J gasser. Appears The Henry J was made as a "utilitarian" workhorse, so the seats had to wear well. They tested 200 patterns of naugahyde, and the faux gator outlasted the rest, so that's what they used. Bad news is that both materials are at least 67 years old, so they are now very worn and torn. But, that's okay, it fits the image of my 'A"......
Early Mustang reproduction bucket seats are about 320 bucks a pair ready to be bolted in. HRP Bucket seats
