@mctim64 He is located in Hanford in the Central Valley. Well worth the drive from SoCal by all accounts. There is also a guy in the San Diego area who advertises on Hemmings but I know nothing about him or his work.
L & R Engines 13731 Bora Dr Santa Fe Springs Ca 90670 Really happy with the work on mine, they do work on the y blocks that Prestige Thunderbird sends over to them so I felt comfortable they knew that engine, they know what they’re doing here!
Call and they will walk you through everything you want to know, every engine will be different depending on what you want and what you have to start with,292 or 312 or 292 with a 312 crank stroker? Good luck keep me posted!
John Mummert Machine Heads, valley pan, thermostat housing and alternator bracket. I’m addicted to cast aluminum and there’s no hope!
When I lived in SoCal (I left in 92 after the Rodney King thing) there were many really great machine shops that would have been okay but as Dave's 32 says you need to know what you are starting with. Everything changes on these blocks and heads as far as what to look for, example, cracked webbing on main bearings on 312 blocks, Posted heads, etc. You really need to find someone that knows what they are looking at before dumping a bunch of money into a 65 year old hunk of cast iron. Mummert http://ford-y-block.com/ and Tim McMaster yblockguy.com have a lot of information and a lot of dyno tests and real world racing experience. I have been to several machine shops here in Oregon that claim to know what they are doing with Y Blocks then in the conversation ask me if I am going to run solid or hydraulic lifters in a 292 (no kidding) then proceed to tell me "well in a small block Chevy" as I am heading for the door. You will find a bunch of people that can talk SBC or even Toyota 20X whatever but very few Y Block people left. (our current Y Block project)
wow!! I'm putting it in a 31 ford , walden speed shop is building my frame . What type of motor mounts are those ?? the y block fit easily in your 32 no cutting firewall i assume ?
If you have Mummert heads, you should be looking north of 300. is John Mummert (El Cajon) still building engines, or is he just selling parts? Now that the Mummert aluminum heads are available, he is no longer porting iron heads.
Every frame is different, mine was stretched 3” pinched and rails reworked to get the car lower, you’re starting new, I had a SBC and a 350 turbo to take out and matching the existing frame mounts to new engine and transmission 2004r sorry but it is the smallest od and direct replacement for the one coming out. The 3” stretch helped but the pinched nose made it a little harder for the sides, used every 1/4”
When enough orders are in, then they cast a number of sets, limited edition. But call John for sure with any questions? Maybe a little north?
Are you looking for a complete engine builder and assembler or a shop that do the machine work and you assemble?
