Does anyone here know the difference between a 1939 merc hood and a 1940 merc hood? Can you run a 39 hood on a 40 coupe with a 40 grille?

    Dave,
That picture is just for attention.... Sorry. Anyway long story is that my Dad is building a chopped 40 merc coupe and recently purchased a 39 merc hood with louvers..... And no clue what the differences are between the 39 and 40 mercury front clips.... I know the trim and the grilles are different, but don't know if the shape of the grilles are different or not. And I'm sure someone on here knows all about it.

I think they have a different shape on the front peak and require the matching grill.

That is a 39 Mercury hood in the first photo, don’t know about the grill interchange though.

I know a -39 Merc hood would not match a -40 Merc grill , the difference is the front edges against the grill , lurker micks pictures show that the -39 Merc grill is abit flat in the top , the 40 Merc grill is more swept up on the sides . The -39 Merc hood has two sidetrims on each side one long and one short , the -40 Merc has one trim on each side . If your building a custom the sidetrimholes doesnt matter , the front edge could be modified if you cant find the -40 Merc hood ...

If memory serves, the '39 deluxe and the '40 Standard should be the same? The trim is likely different.

  11. Got to use matching hoods and grills, they're very different so you can't mix and match them.
