This 833 appears to be stuck. 3-4 are fine. Alignment pin was put in the Hurst and 1–2 readjusted. In this picture 1st gear will not disengage to the neutral position. Is reverse in reverse here or neutral? Tia
to check if it is out of reverse, turn the shaft clockwise, that will put reverse idler into neutral. I did break a shift fork in one of these once and it wouldn't come out of second, might be worth pulling the cover and having a look
I did also, 1-2..on the way to work. I'd hit the brakes hard in neutral to get first...gas it hard and push the clutch to get it to go into neutral...bouncing off the syncro, then go for third et cet. Kind of stupid/crazy as I think about it now. On the way home it was the same thing, only I left it in third and went too slow or too fast as the case was... The stiff forks are bronze, or were in my 71 cuda. Changed it by driving up onto the curb and pulling both the side cover and the bell housing to trans bolts. Then I rotated the tranny and reached inside. Fun times.
i Thank you. It is as far clockwise as it will go. When I watched a video of someone going thru the gears, it looked like the shaft went clockwise to go INTO reverse. This is puzzling to me as I always thought straight up & down (shown) was the neutral position.
What caused the problem in the first place and why haven't you lifted the side door to do a visual inspection?
Remember,,,,A833 has an extra lever inside the case . This lever has a kind of sickle shape and is at the top of the reverse lever inside . This lever has to align with a shape cut into the 1-2 shift arm inside . It makes absolute certain that the 1-2 is in perfect neutral before the reverse can be engaged . Because the reverse idler drives from the external teeth on the slider,,,,which makes it reverse direction . There are different length side arms,,,,,plus or minus clearance . If they get mismatched,,,,the shifter will jam in reverse usually,,,,,,,usually just lock up and you can’t change gears . More times than not,,,if it locks in first,,,usually a dog lug thing,,,key . Or the arm is being overextended . Tommy
Thanks Tommy! I am going to try and take it out of reverse then see if it will come out of first. If it does not, I assume it is time to remove the cover.
Thank you. The car has few mikes on it since the transmission was rebuilt. Problem is it jammed up when put in reverse. Trying to solve with the least effort possible. Maybe tine to pull the cover!
Over the years the few times I've delt with an internal issue like yours I've learned to remove the side case and manually put everything in Neutral, both in the gear case and the shift forks. Then unless something is actually bent or broken you don't cause an issue by forcing the forks to take more leverage that designed for. 99% of the time thise issue is caused by worn or out of adjustment shifters.
Here is a pic of the reverse shift arm inside,,,,you see the sickle like addition on the top ? That mates to the cutout portion on the side cover a shift arm inside . It locates the 1-2 slider in the middle,,,,so it can be engaged to drive the reverse idler . It’s a really good design,,, even though I am sort of partial to it ,,,LoL . These pics are from the web,,,but you see what I mean . Tommy
