Found a rod recently and plan on buying it for a turn key solution to quench my fetish. I'm pretty busy right now and don't have time to do a complete build up. How many HAMBERS have bought a rod completed?

    Did you feel dirty?:D

I guess it depends how you feel about it. if you are in a time crunch, and factor in its probably cheaper to buy on than to build one, it might suit you. But just think of all the grief you get when people ask you if you built it. Maybe you should get a partial finished project.

    Just my thoughts,

Nothing wrong with it. Situations change in life. What would be the difference if you traded? Besides, you will still personalize it. No one is ever satisfied 100% with someone else's stuff.

True...on the "Did you build questions?"

The only thing I would do to this rod is add some paint and stick my hop'd up cadillac 346 in it.. So it would sort of have my personal touch to it.

I like the buy it and drive it...then build one...then sell it idea. Didn't think about that..

some guys like to build some like to buy, i like to do both. we have projects here to last us till i'm 100 or older and are currently active in several builds. we have cars we drive that we built and cars we drive that we bought. hell everybody loves a bargain and sometimes you can't build em for what some guys want to get rid of em fore. suck it up and drive it, keeps your intrest while you build somethingelse, he who dies with the most toys still dies, but he lives while he's here. That depends on how close the car is to what you really want, how well the work was done, the car's condition, and its overall value.

absolutely nothing wrong with it. Who here wouldn't buy the Milner Coupe, Hirohata Merc, Pierson Bros Coupe, etc. if money allowed? You see some cool rod, you buy it, you enjoy it. Nothing wrong with driving a cool car, even if you didn't build it. It's on the road, you're having fun, and you can customize it to your needs as you go. MUCH cheaper than starting from scratch.

Besides, what if you all need to sell your cars because of unforseen circumstances, you'd hope there wouldn't be a stigma for buying a done car!

  12. I wouldn't say it's wrong. It gets you going and beats the hell out of driving the wife's Taurus, Camry, or (insert crappy modern car name here).

But nothing is stopping you from modifying it in the future to make it " your own".

you could do like a friend of mine does, he buys "done" cars for full price, then proceeds to completely redo them to suit his tastes, over several years. That way he gets to pay for everything twice!

I've built one roadster from the ground up and finished it
built another roadster from the ground up...not quite done yet
and i just bought a roadster already finished
now it has historic value to it so thats why i jumped at it
but with all the bugs and flaws that im finding needing fixed just to make it drivable comfortably...i dont think i would consider buying another finished car unless again...it has history to back it up...you cant buy that
sitting in one that has stood the test of time pretty much how you have it..makes all the troubles worth while....just have in mind when your buying it that you will probably have to change things to make it work for you

if you can do all the work yourself to build one you'll come out cheaper in the end by far then buying one....but it does save time
when i sit my cars side by side...its like ...which one do i like more...hard to say...one car i built with my own blood and sweat...but another is kinda...the real deal...its hard to say....i dont feel dirty though....lucky maybe...who knows!!

do what your gut tells you...but you can always just sell it

    good luck

When time is in issea - i would say that it is totally fine to buy a rod and simply add a few personal touches. Then, as time allows you can build your own. Regardless, it's only wrong if you take credit for other peoples work.

  16. Too bad more people with boring (especially foreign) cars don't have this attitude.

  17. I think that sums it up. Each of us has our own abilities and tastes...some are builders, some are drivers, some are both. If you're truly worried about what some might think if you buy one that's "completed", you may regret it later. Maybe not. How's that for vague :D

I've built all of my cars and never bought a "Finished" car, mostly due to lack of funds. But I see nothing wrong with buying a done car. When asked about it, just don't lie about who did the work.

What differerence does it make ? As long as you're happy.
Some would rather build than drive 'em. Some would rather drive them right away. You only got to please yourself.

Doesn't matter because they are NEVER finished anyway! A year after you bought it, you will change enough stuff to make it 'yours'.

I tried to buy this car ... a couple of times ...

I see NOTHING wrong with buying one
If it is what you want ...

It was close enough to what I want ... I would just paint the rims RED, and remove the greyhound. Eventually when I repainted it I would remove the cowl lights and the bull nose off the shell ...

I could not buy it ... so I am building one ... so close to the one above ... it will look like it's brother ... :)

    My thoughts exactly.

I just bought a custom that some would consider to be pretty far along. I bought it for its history and to preserve the work already done, but I'm definitely making it my own. In 6 months, it'll be a whole different animal.

Some guys have a problem with people buying "completed" cars or paying someone else to do the work. I think that's bullshit. Hirohata didn't turn one wrench on his car. Why hate on somebody because they have more money than time? At least they love cars.

Exactly. I bought my first kustom, a beautifully done '56 Merc. It got me into the kustom car scene and I enjoyed owning and driving he car, but everywhere I went in it, people aways said, "Nice car. Is that John's Merc?" Since it was a great car that never really bothered me. I finally sold it because I wanted something with my ideas in it. I couldn't see myself modifying my Merc just for the sake of modifying it.

There's nothing wrong with buying a complete car. Who wouldn't buy a Brizio roadster if they could afford it? I would.

  27. Buy one...I have done it twice, First one cost £1500 more than the pile of parts I already had (and I didn't have a frame or body) sold it for what i paid. The second I saw on the site I was selling mine on (it was the ad above!!) Bought it for 1/2 the price of the parts (and it's all the right parts!!) before it was painted and trimmed. I would never have finished the car as well as it is (would have been in primer with a blanket seat and still been twice the price) PLUS i get to drive it NOW not in a couple of years time.
The down side is It's always gona be "Sam McCormack's old car!" but to be honest I don't care.

I've spent enough money on shop rent and supplies over the past two years that I could have bought a driveable rod with the money, and been enjoying it in the sumers and personalizing it in the winter. Some days, I wish I had done that.

There is something valuable about being able to say "Yeah, I built this." but it's not because other people might ask the question. I build and own cars for myself, not other people's questions, so it's the pride in building the car that's more important to me, and that's why I stick with what I'm doing.

If folks didn't buy done cars then eveyone would get stuck with all the cars they ever built.

I'm proud when someone recognizes my Olds and says, "Is that Steve Hendrickson's Big Olds".

  30. The most fun I ever had in a car, was a car that I bought and every time I got in it, I had "THE FEELING". I never could have built a car that cool and I enjoyed every minute of it. I wish I could have kept it forever, but circumstances said I had to move on. I would do it again in a second.
