buying the wrong parts at a swapmeet!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by MIGUEL ZARATE, Aug 23, 2006.

  1. if you bought something from the swapmeet that was marked that it would work on your car! but when you get home it don't! and the only reason you bought it is because you know the person selling it,so that kind of gave you the insurance it would work! WHAT WOULD YOU GUYS DO! give me some input!

tell him he fucked up and you'd like your money back.

depending on how much was spent would probably determine how pissed off i'd be, if it's something small just sell it on egay. i try not to sweat the small stuff.

I bought a 9" posi third member from a guy at the swap meet. He said it was rebuilt. It howled like crazy. I called him up and he said bring it back and he'd give me another one. If that didn't work he'd give me my money back. 2nd one worked fine. It's a pleasure to do business with people who stand behind their merchandise/work.

I NEVER tell the seller what I'm working on.
They'll always say "Sure that'll fit that" if you do. HaHaHa!!

  5. If you know the guy, see if you can get your $$ back.

If not, then you can try and sell it at your next swapmeet.

  6. what if he does not want to give up the money(300 dollars)! do you just take your loss and say f@ck it!

see if he will give you your money back....did he give you a gaurantee it would fit?

not trying to be a dick , but when you buy stuff at a swap you take your chances . you have to know what you are looking at! check it out carefully and and ask questions of others if you or the seller don't know for sure. i have always felt it's up to the buyer to determine if it's the correct part.. it's right in front of you

sorry to say , it may be a $300 lesson

You might just be SOL but ask him first. Your already on a positive note by knowing who it is.
Most times at a swap meet you bought it and have no idea who or where the guy is. By the time you try to fit it hes 1000 miles away.

When I buy at a swap I NEVER assume I can take a part back for a refund. Even if I know the guy. You are supposed to know what you're looking at, and it you don't, you just paid for your lesson.

    typical swap meet discussion:

    Buyer: What's that part from?

Seller: What are you working on?

I'm with the guys here who say it's up to you to know what you're buying. Yeah, it might have been marked incorrectly, but if I was going to pay $300 for something, I'd be DAMN sure it fit my application before swapping paper for parts.

I also can't imagine a situation where a guy I know would sell me something marked to fit my application, turns out it doesn't fit, and he tells me "too damn bad. You're out of luck." He's a prick, and I'd be sure to tell everyone else I knew that the guy is a shyster and sells stuff telling people it's one thing when it isn't. Depending on how well you know him, I might even set up at the next swap meet in the space right across the isle from him and paint a big sign on a 4x8 sheet of plywood saying "The guy across the isle from me lies about his parts. Don't buy from him" and put it up. But that's going to cause a big ol' storm.
Really though, I just can't see anybody I know selling me a part that's labeled wrong and not making it right.
But, it boils down to you should have known what you were buying. Like someone else said, if you bought it from someone you didn't know, you'd be SOL too.
    $300 lesson.
    Yours, not his.

I agree, I have learned the hard way also (it only takes one time!) Wouldn't worry about it, just resell it!

    :)

Years ago I was into Corvettes ... :)
    I know ... don't ask ... don't tell ... but

I bought a NOS 62 Fuelie unit at Carlisle ... in the GM box ... When I got it back to my space ... I discovered it did not have the drive cable to run the pump. I went back to the seller and asked him about it ... he told me ... " You dumb SOB ... they do not come with a cable from the factory ... If you need someone to walk around the swap meet and educate you on your purchases ... I am available for $100 dollars a hour I felt so STUPID ...

A few years later ... I changed directions and decided to sell the NOS unit at Charlotte AutoFair ... Guy buys it ( I made a few bucks too :) ) ... a few hours later he is back ... saying it has no cable ... so I told him ... You dumb SOB ... they do not come with a cable ... If you need someone to walk around the swap meet and educate you about your purchases ... I am available for $150 dollars a hour :D :D

Buyer Beware ... at the swap meet ...

Buying the wrong parts is a part of the learning system. Everybody has done it. As the price of the part goes up, I make doubly sure that I know what I'm buying and that it will work. If it's a professional dealer, I ask about their return policy. Always assume that the vendor is trying to make a sale and not trying to be your mentor.

30 years ago the vendor swore up and down that a 35 Ford sedan tail light stand he was selling was correct for my 36 5 window coupe. Fortunately for me it wasn't a $300 mistake.

yeah, sure, it's his fault for not making sure it was the right part. but you guys are acting like it's no big deal. last time i checked $300 was still $300.

violence, i hope it can be avoided cuz it's not worth getting in trouble over but gotdamn whatever happened to standing up for yourselves.

i personally don't like being lied to, and if it was a mistake on the seller's behalf then hopefully he'll man up and fork over the cash or at least give him credit for other parts.

you go to a swap meet to get a cheap deal, no guarantees
if you want the correct part,
there are thousands of parts shops with ads in magazines/internet,

sure you will pay top dollar,
and you aren't guaranteed the right part even,
but they will back there part.

you will probably get your money back,
but don't be surprised if he only gives you 200 for the hassle.

I agree... I have bought parts at swaps that are mislabeled.
I should have known better and done a little research before buying it.

All I do is find out what it will really fits (ask here on the HAMB), and I sell it with a correct label i.e. eday or at the next swap meet.

    People are too lazy nowadays...

  25. Caveat Emptor---Thats Latin for "buyer beware". Vendors were fleecing builders when Latin was still in vogue. "Will that wheel fit my Chariot???"---"Yep, fit right on there son, and this is the new high performance wheel"----
You can call the guy and try your luck for a refund, but I doubt its going to happen. Then you can eat the cost and chalk it up to experience, or, put on your sleaze-bag vendor hat and try to dump it on some other poor guy at the next swap meet.

  26. you guys are missing the point or maybe i am. this is a guy that i know been knowing him for about 5 years. thats why im upset!

Then this is personal, retard, take care of business or shut the fuck up.
What do you want, 2,000 HAMBers to take care of what you should do by yourself?

This is the stupidest question I've seen on here yet.

Double check the fit of the part on your car one last time, and then grab your best tools, and see if the part correctly fits up your seller friends ass.

  30. If I fuck up and buy something that won,t fit I shake my head and resell it to the next dumb sumbitch just like me......
