Thanks for that great story! It reminds me of when I had a motorcycle shop and was racing Honda ATC 200X and 250R's in the 80's, and I also sponsored my friend, "Insane Wayne" Keenan. He worked at our local Morrell's meat packing plant and had cut his hand badly in a band saw at work and was off work due to the injury on Workman's Comp. But Wayne was a racer and he was good so he kept racing even with a bandaged hand. So he came up with the name "Donnie Delvac" so that when the reults of the races were published in the local paper, the Sioux Falls Argus Leader, he wouldn't get caught and fired. It worked!

 

You have to admire him on a lot of levels.

Most of the story has been known for years, just the scope of the poisonous relationship with his father is new news. Very sad.... It's even more ironic that he ended up with the business.

The American hotrod foundation has a great pod cast, “the rodcast” there’s an episode, possibly two? S where they interview him for quite a long time. Fantastic to hear the stories right from him.

I met Bob Muravez several years ago at the Hot Rod Re-union at Epping ,New Hampshire. We spoke for quite a while. He told me the same story about his father and the Maytag washer business. He is a real gentleman, and I was happy to speak with him.

 

I heard Bob tell this story in person at the 2003 Bakersfield Hot Rod Reunion when my LSR racing partner Bruce Geisler was inducted into the N.H.R.A. land speed racing Hall of Fame. Bob was the Grand Marshal that year.

Vey similar story with a local fuel team out of Eugene Oregon in the 1960's Driver went by the name Snidely Whiplash.

 

I thought that sounded familiar.

Cool read.......and funny that I had to sneak over and down the railroad tracks to my first MX races...both DNF on my little out classed bikes.....a YJ -1 first and then a HT-1 when the LT-2 were the rage.....lucky I didn't break anything !
