Hey,good luck, man. I think times will get harder for a lot of folks-the days of the affluent middle cl*** are going to be a struggle. For what it is worth,it's not so much fun being at the top of the small business food chain, wither. As an owner, I get paid last after all of my staff. Keep your chin up,keep looking and be flexible. There is a great shortage of responsible, hard working people out in the public world.

Yep, on to bigger and better things...don't let it get you down, it's only temporary...

  5. I am ***uming you are a younger guy.

If you have that factory Ford training that does amount to something. Most manufacturers will let you continue your training as you move from dealership to dealership. It is a benefit to them as well as to you.

I know you were let go, but if you jump from job to job year after year, it looks bad 10 or 15 years later. That has some benefits like a wide range of experience for you, but looks bad to employers.

I would talk to the service manager at the place you just left to see if he can help place you at another dealership. Its not your fault they are slow.

Remember attention to detail is everything. Do your best always no matter how little the task is. Like writing up your posting. It is full of spelling and other errors. I know you may have been upset or in a hurry, but to me, I would have to think twice about hiring someone that slap-dashes through simple things.

    Good luck.

    Zimm,

Being from Iowa myself, here are a few recommendations:

    Lakeside Rods and Rides
Sure, it's a street rodder shop, but it would pretty freakin sweet to work for Riddler winner, right? I'm sure winning the Riddler didn't hurt his business any.

    Brick Street Muscle
Located in Adel, just a few minutes away from Des Moines. By the name, I'm sure you can tell that they restore muscle cars. I think it's a small family owned shop, but it might not hurt to give them a call.

    West Side Auto Pros
These guys are off Swanson Blvd. over by the Hummer dealership in WDM. They fix late model stuff, but the customer service here is outstanding! The owner, Ron, runs the shop and is a great guy to deal with as a customer. My wife knows the wife of one of their techs and he has been there for quite awhile, and knocks down decent cash.

I wish you luck in your search. I was downsized myself about 4 years ago, with a new baby and had just bought my house. Times may get tough, but keep your head up and stay positive. Things will turn around for you.

  8. Zimm, today's the day. I also had my last day today. And get this, I worked for my parents! I, however, had notice. Not sure what I'm going to do yet, but smart guy's like us allways find something. There's not much advice I can add that has'nt allready been given. I'm ***uming that you are fairly young, (20's) so, you can adapt to whatever life gives you a little easier than us older guys. Stick with your trade, even if it may not be at something as "cool" as a rod shop. You'll be cool.

Sorry for your job loss. Just a suggestion for your next job or job search. You need to articulate yourself well. Don't mean to bust your chops but if I got a resume with the punctuation and spelling like in you post it would go in the round file. This is very important in todays compe***ive job market...your ability to communicate.

Again I am not trying to put you down, just a friendly pointer. Good luck on your search.

  10. Sorry for your bad luck Zimm, (and caddychris).

Zimm, I think it's time for a move to the big city. You'll have a lot more job opportunities here in and around Des Moines. I heard that Dewey Ford in Ankeny was getting ready to expand, and will need more techs.
Sorry I don't know too many rod shops, most of my customers are race car guys.
    Good luck, whatever you do!

edit: Look on the bright side, now you'll have plenty of time to surf the HAMB! :)

Come down to Joplin and hand out cards. It worked for Carl Edwards. There should be plenty of people to interact with and show your stuff.
Good luck in your future ventures.

Any Line Factory trained tech will be in demand. Let your factory rep know that you are looking. He and your parts dept guys will be able to put the word out for you to other dealers. Slow down or not, you will be working with-in a week or so. Good Luck...H

zimm just to let you know that the local dealership (Jim Burke Ford) has been advertising for Tech jobs and is even paying sign on bonus to those they hire in some cases. Don't know how you would feel about relocating to the central valley of Calif. though as we are 109 miles from LA and 109 miles from the coast. Gets hot here in the summer and we are home to the one and original California Hot Rod Reunion....alot of car history here and alot of cars & parts available and still reasonable. Just might be worth checking into heres their info:
    Jim Burke Ford
    2001 Oak St.
    Bakersfield,CA. 93301
    e-mail resumes to: hr@burkeauto.com
    fax to: (661) 328-3755
You can view the cl***ified ad via the internet by doing a search of our local newspaper which is The Bakersfield Californian.
Good luck and if I can help you out let me know. Dave

Hey, no big deal. You were looking for a job when you found that one, right? Don’t be discouraged. Your ASET Instructor should be able to help get you into another dealership. There is a dealer out there somewhere looking for you. Don’t forget about the independent shops… they sometimes are hiring also. I can relate to your situation. I graduated from the GM ASEP program back in ‘91. I got burned out on the dealership thing, so I bailed out last January and started working for myself. So far so good…

There is a restoration shop in Comfort, Texas - 1 hour north of San Antonio that has been advertising heavily in the Kerrville, Texas paper for help ! They had the listing under cars for sale. If you need further info. let me know.

That **** ****s man, the same exact thing happened to me except mine was a GM dealer and the GM ASEP program, I was also 20. I got canned because I was the only one with no house payment or wedding to pay for. Although that was probably the best think to happen now that I look back.

If you want to work in a speed shop of some sort as a fabricator get into the dirty stuff as a welder or some type of place that you are handeling metal everyday.
If you want to start your own business learn the tech stuff but also don't forget to learn the business end of things as well. You can be the best metal man in the word but handeling customers and employees is a whole different game.
    Just my 3 cents, Brady
