I always liked the '38 Packard in the Chinatown movie. Finding real Packard parts would be a chore.

I went to college with a guy, whose dad was a Packard collector in Queens NY. Once in a while he would borrow a nice '37 to drive when his car was not working.

Packard’s are not cookie cutter. They are beautiful. I think with your skills it would be a knockout.jmho. Snowman ⛄️

Luxo Rod! I think the big luxury cars of the 30’s and 40’s make nice Luxo cruisers! When I get time, I’ll send you some pics of a Packard coupe a friend did, turned out very nice.

The whole custom car thing came about because a guy wanted a Packard, but could only afford a Ford. If you want a period correct custom, nah. If you want a beautiful, quality ride, yeah. Hell yea.

Of course, you realize that if you build and drive something as cl***y as that Packard, you'll have to dress better, speak more eloquently and drink tea with your pinky sticking out.;)

It could be an awesome ride. More than I could handle kind of build.

Oh man, that thing is cool as hell! Hot rod or cruiser, the hardest part for me would be deciding whether to make it a tail dragger or give it a nose down hot rod stance. As others mentioned, they are big, and heavy, but the straight 8's had a lot of torque to get that weight moving. I remember there was a 32 Packard roadster at the first TROG in California, running fenderless, out there on the beach racing against the little Fords, what a gas that was! If the original running gear is gone I could see running an OHV big block in there for motorvation.

I see one of these almost every year I attend the Nats South in Knoxville, Tennessee and it's a nice car.

I personally like the look, it is what I would call a gentleman's hot rod. HRP

    Hmm, straight 8 w/a blower? :)
    Or a 352, no, better yet, 374 Packard v8 mill + dual quads *&* w/a blower... :D .
Nice resto-rod, luxo-rod, etc. Will make a very nice "reacher". Looks best lowered a little w/a slight nose-down at***ude, maybe chopped ~ 1.5", maybe. Doesn't need all the OEM bits to look good. & not a belly-****on rig.
Go for it iffen the Packard is priced realistically.

  15. That top one was built locally here. I know the guys. The shop (G3) is now closed down. The car was originally started for a customer (owned 2 other Packards that we worked on) that p***ed away and then finished by the shop owner.

If you like it build it. I love the old packards. My uncle had one in the 70's. 36 or 37. Just a smooth looking car.

Very cool looking ride. Here is 1936 I worked on for a client. All new wiring, changed out engine which was seized for another numbers matching, all original.

can't be any more formal looking than a 36 Ford coupe with Cad-LaSalle grille.

I would think, great potential for a Custom and, for a project, the condition doesn’t look all that bad either. I think the seller will need to sharpen his pencil a bit. That’s way too much money!

I spoke to him today. He is not going to come way off that price, I'm afraid. I will probably look at it on Friday.

I worked out in S. Dakota for about six months, probably six or seven years ago (not positive of the timing) but went up to an indoor show and saw that top car. Awesome. Frank from the Pickers show was a guest speaker. The car was unforgettable, Frank not so much.

I'm curious why you recommend the 110 (Packard called it the 115 in 1937). It had a 5 inch shorter wheelbase than the 120 and could pose some packaging problems.
