    So I need a head/intake/ exhaust gasket set for a 218 L6.
Summit price about 40 and change. I need a few intake valves for the engine, I can find them for about 10 bucks a pop, but 20 bucks for valves, and 22 and change for shipping, makes me look through summit and they have the for 30 bucks. Okay. Even though I’m only saving a buck or two, I cringed at having to pay 30 bucks for a danged valve!
What a way to fill out an order;)

There are many places to buy besides those 3 , often with better pricing , shipping & service . If you don't buy from them , they'll get the idea !

I try to think ahead and put stuff like filters, gaskets, things I may want but don't need right now on my Wish List. Then, when I need to fill up an order, I pick some things off my wish list.

Remember when we used to go down to the parts store to buy this stuff? No shipping.

Yes I remember the parts store where you knew there names and they were sharp in getting you what you needed.
Unfortunately I'm afraid those days are over, at least here. The last local Napa's here sold out to corporate and it appears they are doing there best to become Autozone like, running everyone off with any experience including the delivery drivers. It's hard to feel bad about buying mail order when what's left is pretty f'd up

  9. Thankful I can still go to a couple local parts stores that either have knowledgeable help or that I at least know well enough that they will let me search for my own stuff. I try not to order many things online, but have done so through Summit and have also bought stuff I likely didn’t need just to save a buck on shipping too.

When the old cars we were driving weren't really that old, parts stores kept the parts in stock...now that our cars (and the cars that donated the newer parts to them) are really ancient, there's no reason for parts stores to have what we need, since the general public doesn't use those parts any more.

rockauto is pretty good for prices, until you get to the shipping end of it...then, if you can't get all your stuff from one warehouse, the individual shipping charges add up quick.

Sometimes I just order the $20 part from summit and pay the $15 shipping/handling charges, or whatever it is, because I need the part, and it's still the fastest/cheapest/easiest way to get it.

I do this with the family Amazon account only I leave my items in the cart. When my wife or one of my daughters buys a phone case or set of fake nails my stuff gets shipped at the same time. My wife always pays me a inquisitive visit out in the garage when her Amazon bill for fake eyelashes is $45.

I just spent $10 on shipping for a $10 item I can only find from one source that has nothing else I need for my ride. When you're over a barrel, you do what you have to do. Better than not finding it at all.

Isn't buying extra stuff just because equal to buying things because they are on sale but you really don't need it?

I have been guilty of doing the “ add on” to get to free shipping. Many times! Why not get something, anything instead of throwing money away for shipping!

If I don't make the minimum and I don't have anything to add that I can use to get me over the minimum, I just pay the shipping. But I seem to be over almost always.

  21. I never bitch about shipping. I figure it's cheaper than driving round trip and spending two/three days to pick up the parts. Just got my order from Spruce. Couldn't drive there and back for 11 bucks. Same with A&A Mfg. Their stuff always shows up two days after I order, and I know for a fact I couldn't drive there and back in two days for less than the 10 bucks they charge me for shipping.

I just ordered window seals from Summit and the free shipping thing popped up. So.... I bought some 3M Super weatherstrip adhesive and 4 cans of Rustoleum Satin Black rattle cans that were $2 more per can than the local BI-Mart but the free shipping more than made up for the paint price increase. And, Bi-Mart is out of that color, again. :( Win Win.

Always check Amazon. They have alot of stuff! Sometimes it's more, sometimes it's less that other mail order or local stores. Just bought some coil packs for my OT car. NAPA had 'em for $65, Amazon for $44. Free shipping over $25.

No such thing as “Free shipping”. You’re paying for it in the parts pricing no matter how much you order. When you don’t meet the dollar point, the shipping costs are just extra income for the seller. They have figured out most people won’t hit the limit, so it’s not costing them any profit.

They are in business to make a profit, not give away stuff. If they can’t make a profit, they can’t stay in business, plain and simple. They aren’t doing anyone any favors, but they plant the idea that they are so you will come back again. Pure psychology at its best.

I always round out my $100 summit order with safety glasses and work gloves. I have about 100 pairs of each currently that I am thinking about taking to the swap meet.

I don’t follow your drift. The part is the same price wither you pay for shipping or it is free shipping. If you are happy with the price on one item and add a few necessary items to get free shipping , it is a win win situation. I do understand that the profits of selling the item pays the shipping and you are paying the profits!
    But I guess that life!
I will continue to round up for free shipping by adding items I can use in my shop. And now I mostly always order in parts.
And due to this bug, we also order stuff from Wally World and get it delivered free, just to keep from going there.
    It’s becoming a different world!

Ours is pretty good too, and I stopped by and we searched for something that would work...no dice.

  29. No shit! You know the old saying "There's no such thing as a free lunch". That applies to shipping as well.
