I have two new rocker shafts for my Olds 303 engine. There are two holes drilled where each rocker sits. Should the holes be UP or Down?
I believe up is correct. My olds heads are not close or I would look for ya, most of the time oiler holes go up.
Holes go down in 6 o'clock position. 1955 Olds factory shop manual clearly shows this on page 8-8 of the engine section. Greg White
One up, two down. I know if they are in wrong there will be no or very little oil pressure. My two shop manuals ('51 and '52) make no distinction.
Look at how the oil comes up to the shaft from the head and rocker stand. That hole in the shaft has to point down to get oil into the shaft. If that is correct the other holes will be right.
The holes in the shaft that align with the through head oil p***age is also a through hole, top hole accepts locating pin through stand. Wear from rocker/shaft happens at bottom of shaft. I put mine at the bottom. I will check my books.
Quick look at a couple shop manuals does not address this specifically but here are two pictures that do indicate holes down. Also I checked a used set I had laying around, it has them down as well.. for whatever that's worth
