I scanned this from Street Rodder Aug. 73 to save, thought I'd see if I could post it full size. If it doesn't come up I'll post the links, it's pretty good though. -
cheers, great story to read. heres a photo of phil and my old man, that my not seem like much, but the photo was taken in 1966 and my old man is an aussie. him and his mates spent 6 weeks on a boat to get to the US to see hot rodding at its best. for 6 months they travelled around going to lots of hotroddng events and places. Phil gave him the intake for his motor that was in his rod until recently. The 32 is Dick Scritchfields that was shipped to him from Australia in 65 from memory.
Great Post... Somebody's got it right. I'm bumping this in the hopes that some of the other crap will go away.
Some years ago Tex Smith and I were wandering through the cars at he LA Roadster Show and Tex said " Hey, there's a 4 Springer." A what? I ask. Tex points to an old "T" roadster on a Chevy chassis and we walk over to the flatty powered car. He stands there for a minute and says "I think this is Phil Weiand's old car." There is a for sale sign on it and Tex says he wants to get to a phone and call to see if it is the old Weiand car. I hand him my cell and Tex gets the guy's wife who would tell her hubby to go to Tex's booth. The guy shows up and it is the Weiand car with the banger swapped to a flatty. Not many other changes had been made to the car. A check and title change hands ... Tex is smiling big-time. He owns the Weiand roadster! I haven't seen the car in a few years and don't know if Tex stashed it or sold it, but I know that old roadster in the pics posted is stiil around! Carl
Awesome! Just yesterday I pickep up an old set of finned weiand valve covers for my mill! Perfect timing, cool read!
yes. I am afflicted with the need for WEIAND stuff. I have weiand heads on my roadster and spacers for the carbs. Any one got a end plate for a 4-71 that is weiand?? I would love one for the roadster.
well if you happen to stumble onto a second one, you now know that there is a place here in Australia that it would really be cherrished. it would be going onto this roadster to match the heads and carb spacers. ***drewfus photo***
Cool post! I've always been partial to Weiand stuff....don't know why. I have a 1984 R&C Annual with a few articles on some of the originators in the speed equipment field. One feature is about Weiand. Cool stuff man! Someday I'll have a set of Weiand "Cheater" heads for my flatty!
"Someday I'll have a set of Weiand "Cheater" heads for my flatty" I would like to see a pic of what these look like anyone have one??
Check out this thread...........no pics of 'em but some discussion. They basically look like the aluminum Canadian heads but say 'Weiand' behind the water necks. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5850&highlight=Weiand+heads
Wow, super nice.... What I wouldn't give to tour Aus. in that If I run across another I'll get hold of you .
Great article, thanks for posting it - maybe todays magazines should do more stories like this to educate the youngsters cheers Bob
Can anyone tell me when the last Weiand castings for flatheads were produced? I have a Weiand 2x2 low rise manifold for an 8ba but have no idea how old it is. It has raised Weiand lettering on top at both ends and 923 in the middle.
Phil Weiand's 40 Ford coupe is alive and well in the Phoenix area. I see it every year at the Nov Good Guys get together at Scottsdale. Have become friends with the current owner as a owner of several 40 Fords. Im sure it will be there this Nov, still as it was when Phil owned it. HISTORY PRESERVED!!!
Nice to see those pics of the All American Foundry. I used to cast there after Jane Weiand sold the business to her shop mgr. I very much liked the finish on the casting and never had a single flaw in them. It is way too bad that he couldn't afford to keep it. The 1st Cad prototype heads were done there as well as the run of qc's. I still use him, He's @ another Ol School foundry & does equally as nice work there. He has many Phil stories.
